Ken B 3,164 #2 Posted July 24, 2015 I'm not sure its rare. Rare rarely matters if its not a tractor that is desirable and value is always a reflection of desirability.. Most models were only made for one year... With that said an 800 Special is a pretty neat little tractor. I'm pretty sure they had a Briggs motor and maybe electric pto clutch? 953 nut 55,051 #4 Posted July 24, 2015 The biggest variable on the value of a Wheel Horse seems to be geographic, if they are scarce in your area they can command a strong price. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk He's probably talking about 3rd gear. Not an uncommon problem. It's caused by a worn 3rd/2nd gear and/or the input gear that meshes with it. wallfish 16,981 #14 Posted July 26, 2015 The popping out of gear is probably doing it in 3rd gear. It's caused by grinding the gears, usually by someone who was shifting while the tractor was moving or running it without the belt guard. Quite a common issue.The solution is to replace the gear inside the tranny. When you open it up, you'll see why that 3rd gear is very susceptible to this as it only engages the other gear about 1/4 of an inch. The edges of both gear teeth get rounded off which forces the gears apart and it "pops out of gear". The only other solution is to hold the shifter in place.My father just sold one at the last big show. He spent $165 for a rebuild of the starter/generator and got $250 for the tractor. He only paid $50 for the tractor so he was more than happy to pass it on at a reasonable price. It wasn't restored or anything but it was in decent condition and complete except for a throttle cable. Fired right up, ran smooth and drove well. Many people passed it by but the first person to actually check it out and fire it up bought it. That should give you a basic idea of what those tractors are worth and certainly no money to made in restoring it. I don't think anyone is trying to talk you out of restoring it, I'm certainly not. They are definitely cool little tractors and will serve you well if you decide to restore and show or use it but don't expect it to be anything more than a labor of love when it comes to selling it. I was thinking of the normal uni-drive trans but now remember this model had a different trans, a Peerless. That is probably still the same cause causing the the issue but those transmissions aren't as common as the wheel horse uni-drive is.Check out this file for Wheel Horse all years.It shows that trans as a Peerless 1400 and it was also used on the A-90. Lane Ranger 10,943 #18 Posted July 26, 2015 The 800 Special was the Wheel Horse tractor that was made during a plant strike by the managers and parts were from suppliers that were different from their normal suppliers from what I recall. I think this is noted in "Straight From the Horse's Moth-The Wheel Horse Story" ! We have one of those 800 Specials in the barn that is fairly original condition! oliver2-44 9,678 #20 Posted July 27, 2015 My JD 116 has a 4 speed Peerless transmission that "looks" somewhat similar. After 20 years of a lot of mowing use(and 3 teenagers) it started jumping out of 3rd gear. The gear shaft had a slot on each side with a "leaf spring" that had lost tension. It was an easy fix. Some of the bronze bushings were worn and I was able to match them up to common flanged bushings at Ace Hardware, You can find Peerless manuals/parts breakdowns online and parts seem to be really available. PS mine had a recessed bolt in the center of the case under the pulley that was difficult to get out. The recess trapped water/grass/etc so the bolt head was shot.
