RJ 58 axle seals

Recommended Posts

Still working on the RJ 58 transmission. You guys helped me with the seals for the brake shaft and drive shaft, now maybe you can help with the axle seals. Parts manual calls for PN #1257. I order replacements from my Toro dealer and they don't fit right, too small. Do you have a replacement number for me?
Thanks, Ted

I thought the only seals that would work are the ones from Toro. I have that the original Wheel Horse 1257 was replaced by Toro 83-2840 which is still available.

It appears that the shop ordered me the replacement for the #1232 instead of #1257. I'll reorder.
Thanks, I will get this little guy together.

That WH #1232 (new TORO #100863) crosses to SKF 9815.  This seal is made to go inside the axle housing on the very early RJ's...the bronze axle bearing is actually recessed 1/8" in the housing to accommodate this seal.  I believe what happened...as the bronze bearing wore that seal would start leaking.  The fix was Wheel Horse went to the WH#1257 (new TORO#83-2840) .  This is the cap seal that is only available from TORO for about $18 apiece, and mounts on the outside of the axle housing.  Hope that clarifies the situation.  :)  Trust me, I have seen some of these early RJ #5003 transmissions.
