mower blades kicking off

Recommended Posts

Im not sure exactly what forum to ask this question in since im new to these tractors.i purchased this 1984 Wheel horse 310-8 I realy like the little tractor came with a snowblade and all so will get good use out of it.The problem is when I mow I engage the blades and it will mow a little then the blades will kick off or slow all the way down.I pull the handle off and push on again start again and mow a few feet and it does it again.Could it be the clutch?should I take that pulley off is that the clutch behind that?any help would be appreciated.

As the clutch face wears, the trunion at the end of the PTO engagement rod needs to be adjusted.  Pull out the hitch pin and rotate the trunion 1-2 turns clockwise.  Your owners manual should give you a pix of how to do this.  If you do not have an owners manual, look for a download here on RS (under manuals section).  PS, if you have the mower deck too low and or the grass is too high, even with a properly adjusted trunion, the blades will stop spinning

:WRS:   Another thing to look at  would be the condition of and tension on the drive belt going to the mower deck. The tension can be increased by turning the knob on the mule drive (the odd looking thing on the front), to tighten it go counter clockwise.

Hope this helps.

I already did that an replaced the belt and have messed with the tension and everything. Could I possibly have the wrong belt on it? It tightens up just fine

If you have the belt tension correct and the engagement lever is adjusted then you may have oil contamination on the clutch friction disc.Just a thought.

I would check to see if all the pulleys on your mower spin freely. with the belt off. could be a bearing getting hot and freezing up. Just a thought.      :twocents-02cents:

Tmotorsports  Hi, did you ever figure this out?

I have a 269-h or 270-h.  Not sure which.  It has a 3 blade deck with 18” blades with the hydrolift.  When I put the deck low, but not too low…the blades slow and eventually turn off unless I raise the deck a bit.  I can’t get my cut low enough… the deck belts are new, the drive belt feels proper.  Not sure what’s up.   Any ideas??

all else works nicely

If the out side c-clip come out of the groove on the short shaft you won't be able to keep the PTO adjusted. Try a new C-clip with the sharp side out. I have had to replace the short shaft a few time in the last 48 years.
