Kohler K 310-8 Not Charging.

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I have it running now but I do not have a charge to the battery. I thought I had a regulated 15 amp charging tractor but low and behold, it's just like my Magnum powered 310-8 with the unregulated 3 amp circuit.
I have headlights. Both my VOM and the voltmeter on the dash indicate no charge. (12.0 to 12.1 VDC on an old battery right after starting and constant thereafter idle or full throttle).

I wanted to give you guys the stator output but I'm not sure what wires are the actual charge circuit coming from the magneto. I know the one with the diode inline is one of them but what wire do I hook the other lead to? I think I need >28 VAC to rule out the magneto. I just need to know what the other wire is. Three prong connector. Also, do I measure before or after the diode.
I'm sorry about the lack of electrical sense I have retained on these non-regulated systems!

PS.....I also have the tiny diameter white wire from the base of the Oil sensor test switch hanging. Can't see where it used to go.

OK. I looked at 1986 310- schematic and I need to test the AC output before the diode. (daah). DC after the diode. White and dark blue are my two wires. Is this correct?
And it also looks like the little white wire is suppose to go to my light for the low oil sensor.
After work tomorrow, I'll put the meter on these and see what I get.

Hope you can read this page from the Kohler service manual - 3 amp charging system
Here is the full manual if you can't
http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/4104-engine-kohler-k-series-sm-tp-2379pdf/

The AC stator output to the headlight switch shows as dark green on the wiring diagram
The DC wire after the diode shows as being white.

The dark blue wires are for the low oil switch.

I didn't have much time to do anything with it tonight. I did check the diode reversing the leads with it isolated from the three-prong terminal. Open one way, resistance the other. The diode isn't fried but I was kind of hoping it was.

One thing that is easy to try.

Turn the ignition switch to RUN without the engine running.
Check the voltage across the battery posts.
Now move the red test lead to the white wire at the diode.
You should have the same voltage.
If you don't have the same voltage the path the charge current takes to get to the battery is compromised or the grounds are bad.

I have nothing from the stator on the 10 horse Kohler. I do however have a 12 horse K301 from a 312-Auto with the 3 amp unregulated system and the same connectors. I know this had a good charge rate when I tested it a few years back. This is going to go on the tractor tomorrow and Ill pull the flywheel and have a look over of it on my bench.
The 310 and 312 look the same on the schematic so it should just be a drop in! The oil sensor worked. (He says as his last words). :D
