Jrblanke 857 #1 Posted July 2, 2015 Hey guys,Long story short, my uncle has a Ford 8N that he got from my Grandpa. It has seen better days, but it runs and drives, it just doesn't have much power. i am going to do a compression test this weekend, but I am thinking its just tired. My question is this: How much do you think it would cost to have someone rebuild the engine? Also, how much would it cost if I were to rebuild the engine (I would still have to pay someone to do the machine work). What are the best bang for your buck engine rebuild kits? I would love to either rebuild the engine, or have it rebuilt as a surprise for my uncle.
pfrederi 17,741 #2 Posted July 2, 2015 (edited) If I recall correctly 8ns use dry sleeves. You pull the old sleeves put in new ones, new rings, and usually new piston/pins. http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/store/model_parts.cgi?SearchArea=Ford&&md=8N&cat=Engine Overhaul Kits&r=mcatsOnly machine work is to get crank reground and maybe valve seats. They use shell bearings on rods and mains so after your crank is ground I guess you can order them...(Better than my Case DC3 which uses poured babbit bearings. The do it your self route gets to be a problem when you have to buy a sleeve pullerhttp://smile.amazon.com/OTC-Manual-Sleeve-Puller-Set/dp/B000RT8272/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1435862988&sr=8-6&keywords=sleeve+pullerOuch$$$ and the disc you need is not included that will be another $100 If you are handy you can make your own I have a picture of a home built somewhere I will post if I find it.Found ithttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Automotive-or-Tractor-cylinder-crank-in-sleeve-puller-/141704430014?hash=item20fe3e01be&vxp=mtr Edited July 2, 2015 by pfrederi
