squonk 41,638 #1 Posted June 30, 2015 About 5 yrs ago. I painted my 704 with the TSC Valspar Resto paint. As we all know it's NLA. I need to do some touch up work and want to refresh my C-160 which is painted the same. I drove 35 miles to Syracuse to the NAPA paint store. I took the 704 belt guard with me to get shot with their color code gun. I had to wait awhile because the gun was at a shop figuring out a color on a car. A very nice counter girl said why don't we get some chips out and see how close to matching the color we could come. A real Douchey jabrone of a counter guy said just using the chip was good enough. I had none of that and told him I drove 35 miles and I'll wait. The girl used a special natural light and found a chip that looked really good. Finally the gun showed up and she shot the guard and went to the computer. Then she smiled. The gun chose the exact chip she had out. and the winner is:Formula # 3-1-4896-00 It's Volvo color code 250 ALTERNATE 1 as of now all I know is that it is available in basecoat / Clear coat. When I have more time I will check on single stage and EnamelNAPA CAN PUT THIS IN SPRAY CANS IF YOU WANT! Pricey but what are you gonna do if you have to match something and you don't need a lot
rmaynard 15,726 #2 Posted June 30, 2015 What type of paint do they put in spray cans? Is it oil based like the Valspar or lacquer like Duplicolor?
squonk 41,638 #3 Posted July 1, 2015 In the past, I have gotten both basecoat and acrlyic enamel in the spray cans. If they have a formula avalible in the type of paint you want, they can put it in a can.
rmaynard 15,726 #4 Posted July 1, 2015 The acrylic enamels and urethanes I use need an activator. I'm not sure how that would work.
Jake Kuhn 1,556 #5 Posted July 1, 2015 Good to hear you found an alternative, but just thought I'd add in that valspar paint is still readily available on amazon.com. We have got some off of there before.
squonk 41,638 #6 Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) I painted my RJ frame and motor with enamel. Worked awesome. The drier in the formula worked so much better than your everyday spray can. As far as basecoat, different drier and dries quick. The only acivator I used was in the clear. I painted the RJ tool box and fenders with that out of a spray gun. I have used the basecoat from a can on my truck gas tank door. Worked perfect. I still had to spray the clear out of a gun.. We have got some off of there before. Some colors of Valspar Tractor and Implement Paint are available, but not the Restoration Series.
