Replacing Kohler with Briggs, drive belt is too short

Recommended Posts

edgro

I'm in the process of installing a Briggs 16hp twin from a GT1600 into my 414-8
The Kohler needs a rebuild (future project), the Briggs came from a parted out tractor.
The engine sits a little forward from where the Kohler was in the 414-8.
The GT1600 calls for an 83" belt and it's too short.
Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before, and what belt to use.
Thanks for any advice
Ed

The GT-1600 was an 8-speed also?

I don't know the dimensions of the original 107939 belt but it was replaced by 93-9809 which is HB x 83.5" which is 5/8" x 83-1/2" so 83" would be short for the original application also.

953 nut
Presuming the pulley size is the same I would just measure the difference in motor mount to crank shaft center line, multiply that by two and take the old belt to NAPA and tell them you want one that much longer.

The 83 1/2" belt from the Toro dealer seems to fit OK
The Tractor Supply 83" belt was too tight, and the 84" was too loose
I also had to use the belt cover from the GT1600, as the Briggs engine sits a little taller
Project still in progress

I am unable to make the PTO hoop work. The donor tractor with the B&S did not have one, and the one for the Kohler don't fit.
anyone have a picture, or possibly the correct part for sale
thanks for any help or advise

I looked on Parts Tree and any C 1x1 1978 or 1979 loops are the same.

there is something different at the top, there is an engine bracket that  won't let the Kohler clutch hoop fit
I will send a pic
the parts lookup is calling for either 108825 or 106779
I bought what was sold as a 106779, and it is the same as the Kohler hoop, so I am assuming I need a 108825
I am going to do some more searching of parts listings to see if this fits any other tractors with the briggs 16hp twin. I think a c-161 has one, not sure of any others

I keep two broken 130"+ V-belts hanging on the shop wall which I use for measuring belt sizes. One is a 1/2", the other is a 5/8", both ends of both belts have been cut square. Whichever is required, I thread the belt on the pulleys in question, making two measurements. One with belt tension, the other without. I mark the middle of these two lengths and measure from the end to this new mark. I round shorter to the nearest inch and you have your belt size. I.E. if you performed the steps previous, you used the 1/2" V-belt, and the measurement was 86"; go to TSC and get a 1/2" x 86" belt.

Hope this helps.
