Hey guys! New to this site and is my first post.

I have got my Dads old Wheel horse, I think its the 312-8 around a 85 model. It has the Kohler Mag 12 motor, 494 hours on it and my Dad bought it new. This thing is still in pretty good shape, my Dad used to wax it if that tells you anything. lol  I keep it around because I grew up on it and it belonged to my Dad and when I mow it is our time to reminisce about good times when he was alive.

My problem is simulair to Wrightorchard's I think.  Last week it was running like a top but when I would start to kill the motor it would continue to run. Got the motor off by turning idle down and choking. Sometimes the switch would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Yesterday it laid down on me. Turn the key and NOTHING happens. It had done this before and I could sqirm on the seat and it would start, not this time. Volt meter shows about 12-13 and the seat switch light comes on. None of the other lights come on even with the test switch. First I replaced the ignition switch, nothing. Can't find a seat switch, and I had the old one tested and it was bad so I cut the connector and wired it direct even with the ground. Nothing. All wires to the starter and around seem to be ok. Nothing.  What else do I need to do?  Don't know much about these things and the one place I had that would work on it has closed. They loved the ole thing....  Anyway I have had it 3 summers now and the first 2 were plagued with carb problems, now this. I hate to keep spending money on it and I need something reliable so I can get my yard work done but I hate to get rid of it too. What else do you suggest I look at?

Thanks alot,
Flyn Tiger

If you have a Magnum engine is should not be a 1985 or 1986 model. 1987 was the first. See if you can fine the model and serial number on a decal under the seat on the rear fender pan so we can look up the correct wiring diagram.

Ok was guessing on the yr model. He had two of them and could not remember when he got the second one.

Anyway, the ID number is 2112K806    38703.

That was the only number under the seat.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a few basic electrical system diagrams that are helpful in understanding how the wiring system works. They are not specific to any particular tractor and do not include safety switches. All use the 5 post ignition switches 103-991 for Magneto and 103-990 for Battery Ignition. I failed to include fuses in the Starter Generator drawing, this is an over-site and I would encourage fuses be used as shown in the other two drawings.
      Hope this is helpful.
Magneto Ignition system with electric start and solenoid.

Battery powered ignition system with points, condenser, solenoid and electric start.

Battery powered ignition with solenoid, points, condenser, Starter Generator and a mechanical voltage regulator.

We have uncovered a shortcoming in the factory  wiring diagrams for S/G battery ignition systems with a four terminal voltage regulator. The wire from the regulator "Gen" terminal to the S/G  "A" terminal was omitted. This drawing should clear that up.

I’m new to this and not sure if I’m doing this right, But I have a 211-4 with a Briggs 11hp and the thing was sold in my town years ago when it was new. it was my grandfathers till now so it’s a nice piece of history. and it has some electrical problems I can’t figure out, It blows the 15Amp fuse as soon as you turn the key, it all started after the I had to replace the the ignition switch. And now it just blows the fuse. I messed with it when it happened but I have been away in the service for about two years, but now I’m on leave and want to fix my pride and joy but don’t know if my wires are all in the right spot. And my brother actually hooked the battery up backwards by accident for a few seconds while I was away so don’t know if that did anything. So any helpful suggestions or pictures for an example to look at. Thanks

I have been into garden tractors for a few years.  Wanted to learn about small engines and buying an old sear suburban was cheaper than the class at the local community college.  Just got a 1980 C85 (with a johnny bucket on it).

      1994 520 H.   Starter just clicks.
      1. Battery 12.6V, load test OK.,    New solenoid. Ground good. Key switch tested ok. Wiring diagram shows a 'kill' relay - I can't find it on the tractor. Checked the 3 relays under the battery box - they work. Neutral switch, PTP and seat switch work mechanically.
      2. Not able to find article on this problem when searching. There must be dozens. How do I find them?
      3. Can I test the starter without taking it out?
      4. Is there a 'kill' relay?

      thank you...
