scotty 252 #1 Posted May 4, 2015 I have a b-80 that i can push a few feet in gear before the wheels lock up. Any ideas?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,107 #2 Posted May 4, 2015 A few feet would be 1/2 the turn of a wheel. Perhaps you have a broken differential carrier bolt that is jamming against the case. Garry
stevasaurus 22,883 #3 Posted May 4, 2015 Any more history you might be able to add here? Put it on blocks and do the usual...turn one hub one way (while in neutral) and see that the other wheel turns in the opposite direction. Take off the belt guard and belt...put it in each gear and turn the input pulley by hand in a counter clock-wise direction. What happens?? Let us know. DO NOT DRIVE IT...YOU COULD DO MORE DAMAGE. How about telling us if it is a 4 speed or an 8 speed...the more information you can give us, the easier AND FASTER it is to give you an answer.
scotty 252 #4 Posted May 4, 2015 Its a 4 speed b-80. It rolls just fine in neutral with the tires on the ground. I will do your tests and get back with you.
Theroundhousernr 590 #5 Posted May 4, 2015 Sounds to me like a worn out key way in the hub. That's one way I check them out when I buy them. I put them in gear and rock the tractor back and forth. A few inches is fine. A few feet, not so much.
stevasaurus 22,883 #6 Posted May 4, 2015 Yep, I think the post above me may be on to something. Scotty, check out your hubs compared to the axles...it does sound like a bad key or keyway. Take a magic marker and draw a line across each hub across the axle...if the axle line moves in relation to the line on the hub, you have found the problem. It does not have to be that both are bad to do this.
scotty 252 #7 Posted May 8, 2015 Well i finally got a little time to try the marker test. You guys were right. I took off the hubs and there was one keyway in one and the other was missing. Thanks for the help!
