mels 174 #1 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Well, here we go. What harm could come from a little casual out-of-town CL-surfing he says? Riiight... My Dad and youngest Brother will be picking this up for me tomorrow. 10 minutes away from them, 10 hours away from me. Will bring it Home next time I'm out there or next time my U-ship brother Kirk is heading through. Stoked, it's my Wifes' birth year tractor so it'll be a fun surprise for her. Have two vids of it starting and running, don't know how to post 'em up. Pics as provided by the seller, enjoy! Edited April 20, 2015 by mels

mels 174 #4 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Thanks Glenn! Not sure about lucky, but I'll take it. Is the 605 a one year only tractor? Ken, he's an old friend from a car club we both belonged to and were very active in years ago. Lives in Spencer MA and he travels the country hauling everything from junk to gems for everyone. Tossed back a lot of life with that guy over the years, still see each other fairly regularly and he occasionally uses my lot at work off exit 1 for a holding area when coordinating jobs. I don't know what his handle is on youship, but if you ever need anything, let me know and I'll put you in touch with him. JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,497 #5 Posted April 20, 2015 Can you fellas provide mels with additional info on this tractor please. The only thing I could furnish was info on the elusive H60 engine. I couldnt really say to much re desireability and such. I do think the engine would be the weak link. The weak link I could never find for my 500. Retired Wrencher 5,440 #6 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Mels. Nice find . And very clean for it`s age. These are getting harder to find every day especially with the Tecky engine in them. I have Been looking for a 607 for years now with no luck. You can pick up carbs cheap on e-bay plus other parts. Enjoy the ride. Gary B.. P.S. Glens [post] I do have a lot of #`s and Manuals for these tractors just let me know. Edited April 20, 2015 by T1257
mels 174 #7 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) Awesome, thanks Guys. Gary, Wifey says manuals sounds like a good excuse to road trip up to breakfast with you at Auntie Cathies in Springfield. Dang good chow there! Edited April 20, 2015 by mels
KC9KAS 4,741 #8 Posted April 20, 2015 Yes, it is a 1 year machine, but many, many tractors from 1960 to 1967 were "1 year" only tractors. The factory engine would be Tecumseh H60-75118D. It is still a very nice machine.

mels 174 #10 Posted April 20, 2015 ...The factory engine would be Tecumseh H60-75118D. It is still a very nice machine. I wonder is this H60-75182H engine not original then or is it possible that since both the aluminum or cast iron were used maybe these two different suffix numbered engines were too? Wonder what the difference is between them. So many subtle little differences that really only you guys that are queued-in on the details would ever notice let alone know. Pretty wild. Within the scope of my abilities I'm sure, but it would take me so long that we'd have to add another candle to everyone's cake before I got it done!
KC9KAS 4,741 #12 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) mels...This info came from a sheet I always use to check model numbers for tractors and engines. I have found that my sheet differs from some info others may have. I did not see the model H60-75182H on any other tractor listed. It could very well be original...but not according to my documentation. I have a Work Horse 700 with a 7 hp Tecky. Somewhere along the way it was replaced with another 7 hp Tecky that must have been made for a tiller because it has a 2nd PTO that turns opposite and much slower that the regular PTO. So anything is possible! Still a nice machine! Edited April 20, 2015 by KC9KAS
mels 174 #13 Posted April 20, 2015 Right on. Too bad they're now defunct, it'd be fun to see if they had some kind of internal reference that they could use to shed some light on the different part numbers. Sounds like a job for Google-Man!
KC9KAS 4,741 #14 Posted April 20, 2015 I think the cast iron engines were HH60....HH70....and so forth. Right on. Too bad they're now defunct, it'd be fun to see if they had some kind of internal reference that they could use to shed some light on the different part numbers. Sounds like a job for Google-Man! Same problem with "WHEEL HORSE" not much info available from the "factory" on these type of questions we have.
mels 174 #15 Posted April 20, 2015 Thats what others have said here too, so you're probably right. The H60 series as I understand are the aluminum jobs then.

mels 174 #19 Posted April 21, 2015 Happy to report that this ol' 605 is now in the possession of the Stimmel family. As it turns out, the seller lived closer to my younger Brother than I had thought, and he dropped it off at my brothers' house earlier today along with some NOS spares that he said were hard to find. What those parts are I don't know, but will now have to plan a trip out there pretty soon and bring the whole mess Home.

tbarnhart 240 #23 Posted April 21, 2015 That is not the original engine according to the serial number. If I understand correctly, the 4-digit serial on a Tecky doesn't give a specific unit number but a date code. The first digit is the year of the decade (example 9xxx is '59, '69, '79 etc.) and the next three digits are the calendar day. All Tecky engines built that day would have the same serial number as well as engines built ten years earlier or later. I don't know how long they used that system, but your engine was probably built Oct 27, 1969. Possibly Oct. 27, 1979.
mels 174 #24 Posted April 21, 2015 That's interesting stuff, and what I dig about these hobbies I find myself in is uncovering the history one piece of detective work at a time. Pretty cool, thanks 'T. Wouldn't have thought of looking into the serial number config, though, that's exactly how John Deere identified their farm tractors so many years ago...
