My Attempt at a 92 520H Refurb

Recommended Posts

chex313

So while I was waiting for paint to dry...I installed Matts Hydro Pedal kit...It was fun and I can't wait to get it adjusted and try it out. Unfortunately it WILL have to wait, as I have more cleaning and sanding and painting. I guess you folks already know what I am finding out. In my first attempt at a refurb....The deeper you go the more problems one encounters.

Found a broken seat pan bracket and my 48" mower deck has severe metal fatigue and a crack that is not going to last the summer....But anyway a few pics of the pedals and my feeble attempt at painting.

I hope to learn enough this year, so I can take it down to the frame next year. So that gives me a year  to learn to weld and paint... ;)

That's how it goes. Stick with it, you will do fine and the finished product will be worth it.

Paint looks great also!

Got a few more coats on. Seat Pan/fender done...Ran out of sanding discs. So I put the footrest in place and adjusted the Hydro pedal, I think I have it adjusted pretty well, goes fully into reverse and looks like its fully into forward. Returns correctly to neutral. It also clears the floorboard almost an inch.  :)   Need to work on the brake, which has never worked.

Cleaned back end.

Anyone find a substitute location for the Neutral switch? I have read an lot of threads over the course of the last weeks, but I have not seen anyone who moved it. I can deal with not having it... :confusion-scratchheadblue:

I find with Matt's kit since it self sets itself to neutral position (as long as you have it correctly installed) that starting it and having the tractor run away is not a real issue.

Thanks Cleat...Its just an OCD thing, it still works so I wish I could keep it hooked up. But yes there is no real need for it...

Had a few parts in the seat mount that needed welding. Its painted now and I hope to have the fender and seat on today. Also both foot pads. Hope to have pics by end of day. At some point I want to redo the footpads and use filler. Even tho they get covered up with rubber foot rests. I brought home a torn off mudguard from work and will use that.

Also under the spindles on the 48" deck and the whole back of the deck was cracked. That still has to get to the SandBlaster...So its pretty ugly...At least it doesn't have to go to the scrap heap just yet.. :)

Got the hood adjusted right for the first time, my daughter taped off the Hood and I sprayed the black. She also applied the rear decal. Her hands are steady. LED tail lights installed. Took it for a test ride worked fine.

That pan looks great, tractor is looking good too. You will enjoy the hydro pedal (especially for plowing)

My pan needs help!

      Very Solid tractor!

Newer Agro Tires on Rear and Solid Front Turf Tires. Wheel Weights on rear. Fully Swapped Forward Swept axle off of 520h. I ran my 60" Deck on this tractor for over a year with no issues.
Deck it solid top to bottom with no rot and newer blades. Belt and Pulley are good to go!
She's just a little dusty and needs a cleaning. Can get a nice Seat a Tractor Supply.

Now that we are finding more uses for the 1990 520H with a KwikWay loader I am experiencing some power loss in the hydro after about a half hour to 45 minutes??????
      Ideas?

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.
