Digger 66 3,478 #1 Posted April 15, 2015 Well fellas , I just spent the last 2 hours cleaning , rebuilding the carb on the '66 Ariens . It's still surging and I'm really at wits end with this . She seems to run fine between surges but does not respond to the factory recommended idle mix & main jet settings .If I set to the factory settings , it won't even start let alone run . I really hate to junk this old friend of mine , but maybe its time to start over . If any of you have bought a walk behind in the last 5 years & have any comments , please chime in . My brand choices would be : 1 Ariens 2 Cub Cadet 3 Troy Bilt Looking to be 8 or 10 HP . Thanks guys - n - gals And , yes I emptied the tank , changed the fuel filter & refilled with fresh fuel . squonk 40,727 #2 Posted April 15, 2015 Sounds like a worn throttle shaft
Digger 66 3,478 #3 Posted April 15, 2015 You mean suckin' air ? Man , everything seemed tight , the choke butterfly & the throttle shaft . The thing's just in such good mechanical condition otherwise , I'd hate to see my old friend go . Any Idea if they still make a carb that would bolt up & be as good as stock ? It's a 6 horse Techy . I can get some pics together .
Digger 66 3,478 #5 Posted April 15, 2015 The only # I could find on it is the "40" right near the idle mix screw .
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #6 Posted April 16, 2015 Before getting rid of it, I would check out the Snowblower forums. Some of those members have installed new HF engines on older snowblowers for a new lease on life. Some have even cut the smooth auger edges from that era to the current serrated edges. sgtsampay 117 #7 Posted April 20, 2015 For the record my toro 1028 has been great and I got it in 2009
stevasaurus 22,527 #8 Posted April 21, 2015 I've got an early 80's Ariens walk behind...I tried rebuilding the carb, but I was missing something...took it to my favorite small engine place (not TORO) and they fixed it...that was 2 years ago. I'm sure if you have a small engine Ariens dealer, they can fix you up. Your older unit is worth it if all the bearings and auger are still in good shape. Check out this site... mels 174 #9 Posted April 21, 2015 Agreed, better to repair if practical than replace with everything MTD Chinese today.
