I like XP just purchaed a Toshiba Satellite and was able to format the drive and I installed XP clean install and was able to get all the drivers without a hitch. I did a search and found this out before hand. Vista is a memory sucker and still has bugs that why I will stick with XP.

Vista is may favorite. I think alot of issues with this is people dont have enough memory. Ive got 2 gig of ram so ive never had an issue. Been running it for a few months and never as much as had a hiccup.

I recently switched to Linux, running Ubuntu. Why? Because windows is so power hungry it wouldn't run on this computer anymore. Just think how it would fly on something less than 10 years old!

The best part, it's FREE!!!!

Take that Mr. Billionaire Gates.

No crashes. No viruses. Just sweet performance.

If that isn't the dumbest thing yet, Win 10 only saves print screen to the clipboard. What a JOKE.

They've only had since 1995 or so.  What were you expecting?

Now that I think about it, that is sort of stupid, just that I've dealt with it all along and expect and know how to cope with it.  But yes, sort of a joke.  I keep a graphic program, FASTSTONE up all the time and then paste into it do what I have to and copy.  BUT!  If I forget and print screen again...

This is what i would expect from a state of the art operating system, right click mouse, select area, name file and save.

Win 10 has improved but doesn't do all that I need so I seldom use it:

To capture your entire screen and automatically save the screenshot, tap the Windows key + Print Screen key. Your screen will briefly go dim to indicate that you've just taken a screenshot, and the screenshot will be saved to the Pictures > Screenshots folder.Sep 19, 2020

No option to rename the file before saving, plus the windows screen shot broadcasts my open browser tabs, seems that every new generation is worse than the previous.

If your not using Win 10 on a regular basis, which OS are you using.

I'm using Mac OS X 11.2

Key Cmd Shift 3 for full screen,

Cmd Shift 4 to get cross hairs for making a selection, or

Cmd Shift 5 to get a set of on-screen controls

For the image below, I keyed Cmd-Shift-5 to get the controls and then Cmd-Shift-3 to capture the full screen while the controls for the original capture were still being displayed--recursion is a wonderful thing!

The controls include full screen, selected portion (with control points to reposition the selection), or current window--which in Mac parlance is the current app, so showing all tabs if you choose the browser.

Choose to delay the capture (say to allow you to open a menu or get some other action started) and whether to get just an image or else start a recording.

Other options are shown in the pop-up pick list.

Click "Capture" to save that Kodak moment.

Can't name the saved file but you have destination options. It's name contains a timestamp.

Just browsing back topics ....

I have been building and repairing computers since there was no internet to use.   Today, you can pick up a good working computer of any kind, with a reasonable setup specs (cheap to do anymore, computers are like bic lighters now) next to free, clean it, upgrade a few cheap parts, install a linux version on it to match its capabilities and have a computee that runs rings around a brand new 1000 buck+ model of the shelf with (gag) windows on it.

Peopl;e give me laptops to fix, I tell them look, its old and slow with Windows.... put linux on it and it'll run better than new.

and most go... "ah no we will just buy a new one... want my old one ?"

I tear out the conventional HD, put in a $35 SSD drive, run a bunch of tests, clean its guts out and I have a new unit that can outrun a new one.

But people look at linux and act as if its some alien language.... but they have an android phone they love.

On amazon I bought 2 refurbished desk top micro form factor HPs for $100 each.  They are like brand new, with SSD drives, a CD/dvd burner and current USB3 plugs a plenty.  Once I removed windows, and put linux mint on them they run slicker than snot on a doorknob.... probably will for the next 10 yrs.

So you don't need to obsess over brands, really.  Unless you want a Apple (I got a linux cure for that too) pretty much any working clean undamaged computer made in the last 5 years will do whatever you want and more.

Avid Linux user, shamefully been using Win 10 that came pre-loaded on this Asus Rog Strix this new laptop is awesome but with a two second boot I'm finding it difficult to interrupt so that I can make changes in the BIOS to load Linux.

From previous laptops which are difficult to open up for hardware upgrades, I searched the various models available and found that the Asus has a couple of easy to remove screws. I may just purchase another SSD drive then once installed the BIOS will recognize the HD with missing OS.

At least that the plan.

oo thats a good point...one of the last laptops I came across was impossible to open, I ended up chopping it for parts. Too bad, All I was tryin to do is replace the batteries. They seal em up like that I assume to make em non repairable.

Look for removable panels for upgrades.... very good point.

This thread began in:

Posted November 2, 2008

I responded Feb 6th 2021 as soon as I saw it (without noticing that date).  The original poster never posted again...  He came to this forum,  a WH forum,  asking an operating system question and was apparently unimpressed with the lack of responses.  I wasn't a member back then so...  Yet I ask, how can we do better for our next newbie?  (Gads that was hard with a straight face!)  But yet, I believe we have enough expertise to tackle it!  Not bad for a Wheel Horse tractor forum!  Huh?

Good lord!  Why would someone come here for an OS question?  And yet, did we fail him?  :ROTF:

Right about the time covid-19 was creating a laptop shortage, we attempted to upgrade our windows seven to windows ten. The old war horse computer was a dell built like a tank. It has a removable battery and runs cooler than the Dell that replaced it.

Problems arose when trying to reboot the new is we did not have the admin password. My sister had recommended a small shop to but a computer from and he sold us a one terrabyte Dell for 400. The good is we can use the thing to run netflix movies on a digital tv and the old computer just did not have the capability to do that

I took the old war horse along and asked the repair guy about those stick drive things they were pushing on the internet, so he took the old war horse and she linked right up to linux. Now I can look stuff up in the shop using my t mobile phone as a hot spot. Deploraville Ohio has no cable service available and t mobile would be slow to most of you, but it's gold to us as the family plan let's us have three netflix users at once and we are using 50 gigs a month with no penalty for going over.

The stick drive was only ten bucks installed and I can order parts right in the shop and be able to actually see the screen well enough to know what I am doing 🙂

Ubuntu Linux right click mouse to bring up the screen shot dialog, mouse scroll changes image size and you'll note while I'm changing the size of the image the screen shot dialog stays open.

I can name the file before saving into a folder of my choice.

I'll never ever give windows another chance to annoy me.

People who cling to and outdated OS which is no longer supported then cry about a virus that opened multiple browser windows before crashing is inexcusable, that particular virus has been around since the early 1990's

The later OS releases are immune to those older virus's, ya get what ya pay for.

With windows 10 the sound was barely audible.

Linux permits over amplification for the hearing impaired.

The windows key has become redundant, print screen no longer requires it.
