callum12 256 #1 Posted April 6, 2015 Hi all, my friend has a medium size field to keep horses, she has asked me if I would be able to harrow their field with a small chain harrow. I was thinking along the lines of an ATV size one, 4-8ft wide. would my peerless transaxle be okay with this? I'm not sure how much load harrows put on a tractor. the grass is always short due to the horses. thanks for your help, I hope i could do it because i owe them a massive favour! if it involves my WH that would be great, Callum
smoreau 658 #2 Posted April 6, 2015 The peerless trans is not that strong and was ment for just cutting grass, it will pull it and might do just fine, but I had to fix one 3 times, once every winter for a snow plow. After the 3rd time it had to go. It was not a WH but made the same.
callum12 256 #3 Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) I've managed to find a really small one, 4' by 4', that should be ok shouldn't it? I heard that the weak spot is the input gears, i also heard that is it possible to shim it to reduce the deflection of the gear under load. might try this at some point. anyone got any experience using chain harrows with any WH? and how did it go? thanks, Callum Edited April 7, 2015 by callum12
Forest Road 594 #4 Posted April 7, 2015 It may be ok. It may not. This isn't your first post asking advice for what you can do w a peerless. You should look for an 8 speed tractor. They take a rating and keep on pulling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
callum12 256 #5 Posted April 7, 2015 I would love an 8 speed but i don't have the money unfortunately, I would imagine they are quite a bit more common in the US. thanks callum
Steve NW WI 39 #6 Posted April 7, 2015 Can't help with the trans, but my B80 doesn't work too hard with a 4' spike tooth behind it. It wouldn't move an 8' 2 section out of tall grass though, not enough traction. Pulled it around the farm yard in high gear, half throttle.

But if you can't afford one now can you afford to repair or replace your current ride. Towing a harrow might kill it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Non taken, I was asking to make sure I didn't have to repair it. the cheapest 8 speed I've seen was £350 about 3 years ago, even then it was seized and missing a lot of bits. I would have got it but i didn't even have a proper workshop back then.

callum12 256 #10 Posted April 8, 2015 I'll give it a miss, I changed the oil in the transaxle yesterday, I took the opportunity to wiggle the pulley about. lots of movement, so i'd imagine it is already some what worn. thank you for your help, Callum
