bionicfisherman 19 #1 Posted February 16, 2015 I started the tractor the other day and after it warmed up for a couple minutes I engaged the hydro and let that warm for a few minutes. Well long story short I didn't want to move very far. I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the front pulley when I tried to move it and the hydro fan and pulley would stop spinning. so I figured it was a bad belt, after a bit of searching I was 90% sure I needed a 5/8x82" replacement. I ran down to tsc and grabbed one and commenced replacing it. Bingo! it moved again, or so I thought. I could now go forward and reverse on level ground but when I was snow blowing it would start to slip again under the pressure of pushing snow or if I tried to run at top speed. It's defiantly slipping on the front pulley each time. So my question is did I get the wrong size? I checked the idler pulley and it seems fine spinning freely and the spring is good. It will engage right at the bottom of the handle making it seem like the belt is to big. If it is the right size did something shift on the tractor I should look for? maybe a bad new belt? I would hate to buy the same size belt only for it to slip again and be out two new belts that I cant take back. I was thinking of trying a 81" instead seen as there's so much stroke in the engagement. At full engagement the belt almost touches its self. Any insight would be appreciated. 1981 c-145 auto with 14hp and I believe a Eaton? filter on back left side. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
squonk 41,470 #2 Posted February 16, 2015 People will tell you to only use WH belts but I've used TSC and Napa green belts on a wide variety of Horses for years with no issues what so ever. I think you have a problem with the tensioner maybe. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

squonk 41,470 #7 Posted February 17, 2015 If the correct belt is supposed to be 81.5 " that extra 1/2" in length could make all the difference. You may be able to get away with a 81" belt. Sound like not enough tension available with the longer belt. You are right. It makes a huge difference. The 82" worked for a couple hours till it worked it self in to the pulley and possibly stretched a little bit. I tried the 81" and it doesn't slip, but its also so small that it won't release fully when you pull up the tensioner. I guess its time to order a oem.
