Pully brake adjustment (?)

Recommended Posts

I've been trying for months to adjust the pulley brake on my B 80, it's either too tight or too loose no matter what I do. Any suggestions?

"Pulley brake"? Not sure what that is.  :scratchead: If you are referring to the regular brake adjustment, be sure that you are starting with a brake band that has a good lining. Then follow the instructions in the manual to the letter. It has always worked for me on my B-100's (same brakes). Doing it as described in the manual gives me proper braking plus the parking brake works correctly as well.

Or are you referring to the PTO brake. If so, be sure that the internal spring (104841) is good and pushing the pulley out when the PTO lever is released. Those springs will get weak or sometimes break. Then with the PTO engaged, tighten the brake pad against the pulley with a .012" feeler gauge between the pulley surface and the pad. That should be all it takes to get the pulley to stop when the PTO is released.

If that doesn't work, try .010". If that doesn't work, scuff up the brake pad or get a new one.

Well, I guess that is my problem, there is no spring. Guess I need to find one. Yes, the PTO brake is the one in question, it has a new pad. Thanks Bob. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Bob, I can't find the part # you referenced (104841) anywhere on my parts list and the master parts viewer doesn't show an internal spring. It is 1974 B 80, K181. Any advice? Thanks

Thanks, I'll get that ordered. I can't find reference to that spring anywhere, can you reference something to show me where it goes? I believe I have a good idea of the location, just want to be sure. I really appreciate your help. :)

The problem probably is that your 1974 B-80's K-181 has a different spec number than the 1977 B-80's K-181. The parts list that I looked at is from a 1977. If your crankshaft is threaded on the PTO end with a 7/16" hole, then this setup should work. There is a stud, a thrust bearing, 2 thrust washers and a spring.

Thanks Bob, my diagram does not show the spring (?). I will get the spring ordered tomorrow, thanks very much for your willingness to share your knowledge. :)

No problem. However, before ordering the spring, make sure that you have all the other components, or at least be sure that your crankshaft is drilled and tapped for a 7/16" stud. The spring will be useless if the other parts are not there as well. The stud is expensive, but I made one from a standard lug bolt by putting it in the drill press and grinding the head down to 7/16" diameter. Then I cut a slot in the end with a hacksaw. I think the thrust bearing and washers are still available.
