Forming Spring Wire

Recommended Posts

shallowwatersailor

I'm looking for information on making some small springs. On one of my walk behinds, it uses ratchet hubs for a differential action. One out of the four springs for the pawls are broken and I need to make a new one. I bought a roll of spring wire and intend on shaping a new one. It seems to me that I will need to anneal it after I form the spring to keep the shape. Correct?

Correct, and for a 'given amount of time', the thicker the wire the higher the temp and time.

There are "Mechanics Books' that have charts for this,  and probably on Google or YouTube.

Slow raise up to the temp, hold for a given time, then a slow cool to get perfect Anneal.
