cleat 6,773 #1 Posted December 6, 2014 (edited) I didn't really need it but this one was just a few miles up the road from my house. Runs a little rough but it starts up instantly. HC rear end is noticeably faster than the H. Came with a 48" deck that operates smoothly but will need a cleanup to determine actual condition and a 2 stage snow blower in great shape. JackC 617 #4 Posted December 6, 2014 Those are great machines. My absolute favorite. Other than a litter dirty toward the bottom, it looks to be in good shape. If it runs rough, it may need a carb cleaning. But o'h my gaud, get that yellow seat off it.
Bert 760 #5 Posted December 6, 2014 Very nice find
cleat 6,773 #6 Posted December 6, 2014 The PO recently put that seat on. He bought it at the same place I bought my seats for the two 520-H's. You can get them in black or yellow for the same price. Why he bought a yellow one is beyond me. It will get replaced as the tractor gets cleaned up. Cleat

AMC RULES 37,143 #9 Posted December 6, 2014 If it's in good shape... might just VHT vinyl dye it back to black.
JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,498 #10 Posted December 6, 2014 Cleat, thumbs up. You have those 2 stage blowers all over up there. You know one day I might be compelled to try one myself. Although the down side its muscling it around from what I hear. Glenn

cleat 6,773 #12 Posted December 31, 2014 (edited) Stripped down to frame and rear end. Sanded and painted. Bits and pieced being painted. Tunnel rear section where cracked has been repaired. Also tore down deck. No issue with rust but lots of cracks and some really bad globs of weld here and there. Cleat Edited January 1, 2015 by cleat

cleat 6,773 #14 Posted January 17, 2015 Work on 520-HC is coming along. Foot motion control is installed along with new bushings throughout. Made new front axle kingpin and installed. Steering is now nice and tight. Dash and gauges are installed. Wire harness is awaiting the new 9 pin connector before being installed. Engine has had heads pulled , all carbon removed, valves set. No wear at all in the cyl. bores. Engine has also been cleaned and de-greased on the exterior. Once new 9 pin connector is installed, engine will be re installed. ericj 1,578 #18 Posted January 18, 2015 i thought all 520-HC had 3 gauge dashes not the 5 gauge dash do you know if yours has been changed or am i mistaken ? i've been wrong before and i'm sure i will be wrong again eric j
bmsgaffer 2,046 #19 Posted January 18, 2015 That's looking great! When you say "new bushings throughout", did you replace them with toro parts or did you use something from another supplier? I am pre-teardown on my 520 and wanted to try to get all the bushing and wear parts ahead of time to have ready to go. Its just hard to tell from the IPL all the parts I should be replacing... or their sizes to see if theres a replacement for them.
cleat 6,773 #20 Posted January 18, 2015 i thought all 520-HC had 3 gauge dashes not the 5 gauge dash do you know if yours has been changed or am i mistaken ? i've been wrong before and i'm sure i will be wrong again eric j The HC has the 5 gauges but only one indicator light. I have for now put on a 520-H dash cover showing all the indicator lights but the only one that will work is the low oil pressure because the HC dash cover is missing the decal for the low oil pressure light. JackC 617 #21 Posted January 18, 2015 Looks great. When you are done with it it will be better than new. The 520HC does have all 5 gauges like the 520H. The indicator light decal at the top of cleat's dash is for an H. The HC only has one indicator light for oil pressure. The 516 and 518 had fewer gauges. cleat 6,773 #23 Posted January 18, 2015 That's looking great! I bought some bushings from my local Toro dealer but ordered most from http://www.mowerpartpros.com/p/Wheel-Horse-Parts#/Toro_Consumer/31-20OE01%2c_520-H_Garden_Tractor%2c_1988/SEAT/31-20OE01-2550-1988/810623R1-23R10072-00033 The little plastic ones for the motion control, PTO, and hydraulic control are fairly cheap. I made my own front axle pivot pin. For the steering block I drilled and pressed in brass bushings. For the steering upper shaft I drilled out the bushing holder to accept a wheel bearing from an early 520-H so I now have a ball bearing upper support so the steering is easier but still nice and tight. I did replace the motion control block pivot pin because mine was just too worn to give proper justice to Matt's kit. Near as I can tell, the front wheel bearings are just 1" trailer bearings. I bought a new ignition switch from ebay because mine was bad just on this machine, the other two are fine so your may be as well. For the hood pivot, I drilled from the 3/8" rod to a 1/2" rod and now it will be nice and tight. I have not installed it yet because the hood still needs to be painted. cleat 6,773 #24 Posted February 2, 2015 Work is continuing on the HC. Wheels have been bead blasted and painted, wire harness is installed with a new 9 pin connector. Other covers and guards bead blasted and painted as shown. Some decals installed as shown, thanks Terry for the kit. Cleat
JackC 617 #25 Posted February 2, 2015 Looks impressive. Worth every bit of the effort. Do you prime before top coating and what paints are using? TIA
