callum12 256 #1 Posted November 24, 2014 hi all, I've decided to fit a exhaust stack to my WH A-800, it has a 10hp techcumseh engine. i'm planning to using 2" piping coming from the outlet using a flange, going to a 90 degree, up through a silencer and finally through a straight bit of 2" pipe coming up with a rain cap on the end. i may weld a perforated baffle somewhere in the exhaust system. i'm just wondering if 2" pipe straight from the engine will provide enough back pressure? baring in mind the exhaust will be about 3' tall with a 90 degree bend, a silencer (muffler) and possibly a baffle. i'm sure it will be fine but i just wanted to check. i will be bracing the exhaust using the brace mounting holes for the previous exhaust. does this all sound good yo you? thank you very much, callum

meadowfield 2,616 #3 Posted November 24, 2014 It should be fine, lots of folks run straight thru !
callum12 256 #4 Posted November 24, 2014 nice, just ordered the silencer, rain cap and adapter. the adapter is because the mounting studs on the engine for the flange aren't far enough apart to fit a 2" exhaust straight to it, because of this I'm now running 1" from engine to 90 degree then 2" up. i'll be sure to take pics every step of the way! straight though would be very loud i could imagine!i don't really want to wear muffs every time i ride it!! thanks for the encouragement!!

callum12 256 #6 Posted November 25, 2014 it will be my first time mig welding, I've got a very experienced car mechanic and welder to help me though. and yes, piccies every step!! here's the first: the silencer: callum
Tankman 3,520 #7 Posted November 25, 2014 Can't wait to see your stacked exhaust! My grandsons love the stacked exhausts!
callum12 256 #8 Posted November 25, 2014 very nice, I was debating between having the silencer with rounded ends or squared ends. i went for rounded ends because most vintage tractors seem to have rounded ends on silencer. going to do it over the weekend, hopefully finish it in one day, its pretty simple. thanks for the pic, Callum
callum12 256 #9 Posted November 26, 2014 the silencer arrived today, the metal is nice and thick, will definitely last! just waiting on the rain cap and adapter now.

callum12 256 #21 Posted December 16, 2014 not too sure about good times though! but yeah, when it's right it'll be great. some of his friends have kindly offered to takeover they are both experienced welders. I had my first experience with welding, it was only a small job, it was a bit dodgy but i produced a solid weld and felt my self getting better as i filled in the bits i missed. i've just got to get used to keeping an eye on how far the nozzle is away from the weld, i found it quite easy for it to drift away while concentrating on getting weld where i want it to be. all with good practise i suppose. callum
Digger 66 3,488 #22 Posted December 17, 2014 Practice , practice , practice . I 've been sticking metal together for years , but I sure ain't no welder . Here I'm sticking the steel together for the bottom spar frame strengthener for my Renegade .
callum12 256 #23 Posted April 2, 2015 Right then guys, the time has come! after ordering all 2" stuff and letting the plans mull over I thought 1.5" will look much more in keeping, so the stack is all welded and braced I just need to get the clamps to finish it off. I was worried about the bracing side of things but to be honest you can pick up the tractor with the exhaust!! there is no weight being taken by the flange. the stack is stainless while the bottom half is simple mild steel. I might wrap the exhaust or make some simple heat deflectors for the spark plug and around the carb I'm not sure yet. but as promised i have got plenty of pictures for you all: we began by making the flange and welding the reducer on, this took the pipe from 1" to 1.5" sparks flew! a sharp (ish) 180 degree piece was made using two 90 elbows. this will allow the exhaust the go right past two ideal bracing points. after not having enough straight we had to get creative with the off cuts! it will be wrapped so you won't see this, the welder kept playing up here: from then on it was simple butt welding, no point in showing this really, so here she be! a stacked A-800 i have yet to cut clamp and cut down the stack part so i haven't shown this bit yet. I hope you enjoyed looking at this little project, callum This project is dedicated to a very good friend that sadly passed away before getting on to this project, may he rest in peace. callum12 256 #24 Posted April 5, 2015 I'm debating whether i should wrap the exhaust or not, i've got a 10m roll of fibre glass wrap. what do you guys think? I wouldn't wrap the stainless stack of course, just the mild steel bits around the engine. thanks for you help, Callum
Sparky-(Admin) 21,542 #25 Posted April 5, 2015 I would wrap it. Very close to the hood eh? Mike........
