varosd 1,185 #1 Posted November 22, 2014 I was going to use POR-15 on the 48 SD before putting it away for the Winter. I saw this VHT Expoy paint and decided to try it out. went on real nice w/o primer. I wire brushed the grass and rust off and used one can. it was $6 or 7 for a can. I might do another can in the spring and see how it holds up.
rmaynard 15,719 #2 Posted November 22, 2014 I have never read the details on VHT's Epoxy, but if it's a true epoxy, it has to be 2-parts. Is the can one that has the button on the bottom to release part "A" to mix with part "B"? Also, what kind of safety warnings does it have? Those activators can be dangerous if inhaled. I have seen the 2-part epoxy sprays from Eastwood that use a 2-chamber can with a mixing nozzle.
Coadster32 793 #3 Posted November 22, 2014 The top of that can look a bit different than a regular spray bomb can. Perhaps it does mix out as it sprays. More info??
varosd 1,185 #4 Posted November 22, 2014 normal spray can so I guess its not true 2 stage epoxy. maybe like the POR 15 rest reformer out the can, there is not a activator correct? time will tell
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #5 Posted November 22, 2014 For what it is worth, I used this paint on my truck's frame three years ago. The only prep that I did was to use a hand wire brush and wipe with a cleaner. No primer. It sees a lot more use than a mower deck and I only rinse it when the truck gets washed. For the money, it has held up well. I will probably do it again next spring and take more time with prep.
rmaynard 15,719 #6 Posted November 22, 2014 I love the VHT products. It's good to see some practical examples of how it has held up over time. I use VHT vinyl dyes on plastic gas tanks (black and red), steering wheels, grips on lift levers, plastic dash panels, and seats.
Tankman 3,520 #7 Posted December 1, 2014 Thanks maynard I have some black PE tanks that need sprucing up. Any special cleanin' needed?
rmaynard 15,719 #8 Posted December 2, 2014 Any special cleanin' needed? I clean the tanks with mineral spirits to remove any oil-based stains, then spray on a full strength cleaner like Fantastic, and use a gray Scotch Brite pad to give the surface some "tooth". Rinse it well with hot water, then after it is dry, I wipe it down with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Spray a light coat of VHT, let it dry for about 10 minutes, then spray another medium coat. An additional coat is usually not needed on the black tanks, but may be necessary on the red ones.
