1958 ATCO Side Wheel Cylinder (Reel) mower Rescued

Anglo Traction

Thought I'd post some 'before' and 'so far' pics of this British Mower here as well seeing this section is underutilised (main thread on MoM link), and on the basis that there may be some U.S. interest in this type of mower.

I know there were several similar makes and designs in the U.S in the 50s like Toro and Jacobson.

This one was so close to complete scrap, but I think I've got the better of it to date-

As found-

24" cut for coarse grass like Paddock or Orchard (I thought it was for finer lawns originally :hide: )

Engine is pull start 2 cycle 98cc Villiers with Oil Bath Filter. Single Clutch Plate and power drive.

Lot of work to date,  but have reached this point of near completion.

Was hoping to finish by winter, but have failed in that plan.

If interested in the rebuild etc, here is a link -  http://myoldmachine.com/topic/726-yellow-mower-challenge/

Regards.

Very nice work, looks like a brand new one.  :handgestures-thumbsup:

I have some old Toro reels but not as old as that one.  I hope to get them looking like yours in the near future.

Thanks for the great comments Gents !.

Geno, you have some really nice projects there  :handgestures-thumbupleft: ...... I always seem to only find total wrecks that I have to fully refurbish.

I've yet to find one that only needs a clean up with an oily rag and a few new bits to get running and use  .

This one is on hold while I get myself sorted out and the weather warms up (old joints etc), but should be cutting this Spring.

Regards

Sorry for the lack of reply Neil, and thanks for the compliment and confidence. I'll drop you a PM some time and try and catch up with you.

Only made a small amount of progress on this project since my last.  Hope to get it running and use early Spring. Will post pics.

Regards

Been a while. had some major issues with the Reel/Cylinder Fabricator. Basically had to find another similar machine for a replacement !. Surprised to be contacted by a Forum Member fairly local,  but I got one. Even managed to refurbish the Optional Grass Catcher that was purchased with the Mower at the time in 1958.
Virtually finished now and running the Engine In to bed the new Top end (Piston, Rings and Small End Bushing). Drive Train smooth and surprisingly quiet-

Do you have any other pictures of this? I'm fascinated with this machine.

Wow, that is a beautiful job. If I only had 10% of your talent...

I have belonged to forums where the members would complain if you posted to a topic that had been quiet for 6 months or more.

Had someone not replied to this, I would never have seen this thread, or these awesome machines
