cruisnblue48 835 #1 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I purchased this Wheel Horse puller a few weeks ago on local c-list post and I am trying to determine what model it is... or once was, so I can determine what future replacement parts I may need to find someday. The c-list add claimed it was a "1962" WH puller... which I know it is not that early. Obviously, the John Deere '60s style round fenders and the old style round pan seat are not original Wheel Horse equipment for this tractor. My first guess was that it was a 1968-69 Commando 8 based on the hood decals and the "Commando 8" decal on the sides of the fuel tank support. However, the hood was apparently repainted and the location of new decals were incorrectly applied too high on the sides of the hood. So, I next find the model-serial number tag and discover the model is/was a "1-0110 7" which apparently makes it either a 1971 Workhorse 800 or a 1972 Commando 800 (with the wrong decals). I was also told by the po that the 12hp engine currently in it is not original. So, my questions are... 1) What does the 7 following the model number 1-0110 indicate? 2) What are the basic differences between a 1971 Workhorse 800 and 1972 Commando 800? 3) What does the "800" specifically refer to in these models? Lane Ranger 10,968 #3 Posted October 31, 2014 The tag number 1-0110 lists it as a Commando 800 4 Speed with a Kohler K-181S-30461 D motor and a wheel horse 5085 unidrive transmission.
octfst 378 #4 Posted October 31, 2014 There should be numbers on the engine. Then we can tell you what you have
baerpath 517 #5 Posted October 31, 2014 Motor looks like it has part of a JD clutch on it. Might not help
Geno 1,929 #6 Posted November 1, 2014 Nice puller. The 800 refers to 8HP.
cruisnblue48 835 #7 Posted November 1, 2014 (edited) The engine is a 12hp Kohler. It is not the original engine. There are no numbers on it that I could find that would help. The po was a John Deere guy, so my guess is the engine probably came from a mid-late '60s JD tractor along with the fenders and seat. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,040 #9 Posted November 7, 2014 1) What does the 7 following the model number 1-0110 indicate? The 7 is not used but if you subtract 5 from that 6th digit you get the model year. 7-5=2=1972 You will see 6, 7, 8 and 9 representing 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 on the attachments at the time also. cruisnblue48 835 #10 Posted November 8, 2014 (edited) Thanks for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it. So, apparently I do have a 1972 Commando 800 here. Already found an original owner's manual and parts list for that model/year. Jwiss, I bought the tractor from a nice young man near Dillsburg, so yeah that would be around your area. I believe he said that he bought it from someone else recently and may have done some of the mods to it. Overall though, it's a neat little tractor.
