I have an oil leak which could be just a sump plug, need to check that, I have new sparking bits, no time to fit as yet. finger's crossed for Friday.In the mean time I finaly decided that I am going to re fresh the 101, so on the weekend I removed the old decals. Horse46 519 #77 Posted July 21, 2015 Bit of an up date.I have removed the seat unit, rear arches, bonnet/hood and the cover over the gear stick and took them to work and sand blasted them, except the bonnet as it wouldn't fit in the cabinet, I will have to hand sand it.Anyway got them all home and gave them 3 coats of red oxide, and I have just sanded them back ready for some hi build primer.I hope to take the wheels in over the next couple of days and give them the same treatment.The 16hp motor is still under going a good inspection before I make the decision to swap them out, it has an oil leak, but it is so mucky underneath I can't find from where it originates. I will have to get the jet wash out for further inspection.Not much to see really so no pictures this time. Oh forgot to mention, I went to my local car paint shop armed with the photo of the red paint, and came back with a tin of VW Tornado Red, it is bang on. Horse46 519 #78 Posted July 24, 2015 Spent the afternoon armed with a rattle can of high build primer and got the rear wheel cover done, the plate between the gears had a reaction so had to do that twice, and i have sanded and primed the hood, both sides.Tomorrow hopefully get some high build on that too. Horse46 519 #82 Posted July 27, 2015 What kind of a finish would these tractors have had when they were new, could you see any imperfections in the panels?I haven't found a trace of primer anywhere, what paint was it enamel, cellulose ?I don't really want a car kind of finish because I want to use it, but I still want a nice shine.I've spent ages sanding and priming but without the use of filler it's never going to be perfect. Horse46 519 #84 Posted July 28, 2015 I removed the foot boards, belt guard and opposite side, the front mule drive, ready to take to work to grit blast. It's not really needed but I did the same with the rear wheel arch cover and that has come out really nice, well in the primer it has.It's a lot more work but hopefully it will payoff in the long run. wheeledhorseman 574 #88 Posted August 4, 2015 RE the finish when new - they were garden tractors and I've come across curtaining and even the odd run in the original paintwork, though usually where it's not too important. Re imperfections, all a matter of personal taste. Many restos end up probably better than new, concourse even. I like to leave the odd battle scar that's part of the tractor's history, and after a few years use the paint finish wears in anyway and it all looks 'authentic' for a 'worker'. Just my opinion. Besides I can't see me going to any events with it.I'm never going to get a super shiny finish with rattle cans, as its to hard to keep it wet in a big enough area without getting runs or peel.I'm hoping to get a bit done tonight, so watch this space, or the one I've started in the resto & mods section. Rubber gear stick cover, T throttle handle and my long awaited sump gasket a couple of picks to liven up the euro section. The opinion of the pin is that of the governor, I have no idea what this looks like so I have to take everyones word for it.For some better news, I reinstalled the 10hp for now so I can at least get some seat time on my newly painted pony. The piston looks intact Mark, and the bore, could it be possible that the governor weight broke up and fell down the engine without touching anything?The con rod looks a tiny bit bent, my thoughts were maybe the tail struck the bits and broke off? Horse46 519 #100 Posted September 10, 2015 (edited) I managed to get the tractor going tonight, not running properly, (needs choke on or it cuts out) but at least it runs. I had to strip the fuel pump though because the lever managed to release itself, so no vacuum.Here is a pic of my new seat, very comfy with the back rest.
