Wheel Horse made Bolens?

Recommended Posts

This will be a good one.... I have been searching for grates for my Bolens chipper I got.... I finally broke down and called my buddy that does small engine repair.... He has been dong it for 30 plus years. I tell him what I am in need of and he tells me to look at the Code, on the engine, so he will know what year it was made... First 2 numbers 88..... Pause on the phone. Well, that unit was made by Wheel Horse for Bolens and no parts have been available for quite some time. SOOOOO, Wheel Horse made Bolens products at 1 time is my question?

THAT IS THE ENGINE CODE, NOT THE UNIT CODE. THAT ENGINE MAY HAVE BEEN ON A WHEEL HORSE AT ONE TIME.

I presume it's a Briggs and Stratton engine, yes?  The first two numbers of their "Code" number are the model year.  In your case, 1988.

Somewhere along the line, I think the Bolens name was sucked up by Garden Way which was the company who took over TroyBilt.  Eventually Garden Way became part of MTD.

I'd imagine there is just some confusion that Garden Way - who made the "Horse" tiller - and Wheel Horse were related.

Thanks. I knew I could get some type of feedback for this type of crossbreeding! :laughing-rofl:
