Rimcrew 3 #1 Posted October 12, 2014 (edited) Is there a way to adjust the PTO assembly to shorten the engagement distance, other than the trunnion on the rod? When I purchased my tractor, the PTO engagement rod had been cut and put back together with clamps, making it much shorter. I figured it broke and they cheaped out on fixing it so I bought a new rod. Now with the trunnion adjusted as far as it will go to shorten the throw, the clutch is around a 1/8 - 1/16" away from engaging. I guess I now know why it was shortened... The clutch disk looks to have a plenty of friction material left on it, maybe not enough? I purchased from the original owner, so I don't think he changed the PTO assembly, but is there a way to confirm that it is correct? Did they change over the years? Thanks! barnerr 0 #8 Posted February 2, 2021 I have a 314-8 and have recently started having the PTO clutch slip when snow blowing. I've had many of these machines and never had this problem before. I replaced the clutch 2-3 years ago and never had any problems. The clutch disc seems to have plenty of lining. I adjusted the rod up to put more pressure on the clutch but that didn't do it. I put shims behind the pulley to take up more adjustment. I replaced the bolt on the swing lever for the clutch rod because it seemed loose. There two c-clips on the short rod that goes through the bearing if the c-clip comes off the out side you can't adjust the clutch. the other problem that can cause that is a worn out bearing the short shaft goes through. The bearing is a "Z9504RST" I ordered three a year or so ago for around $5 each. It is usually listed as an Agriculture bearing. Thank You for that information. I checked the short shaft for bearing play and the outer c-clip. They both seem correct/normal. I shortened the adjusting rod again so that it is hard to throw in. It seems tight now. I am baffled as to what is causing this problem. I have adjusted the rod before and it seems like it is tight to throw in for a short while but then when I run the snow blower for a while it starts slipping, seems to lose the tension and is easier to throw in. What else? My 312-8 doesn't have a lot of tension either but I only use as a back-up it with a 42" mower deck. There does seem to be a lot of lose motion with the lever engagement rod. I have not done anything to the 312 see If I could fix it, I usually use it for jobs that doesn't require the PTO. Some members have added spacer washers to limit side to side movement of the PTO lever. I don't know if the used metal or nylon washers. Check the rod end at the lever to see if it's worn. They changed to a short PTO lever shaft when the change the battery and gas tank location. The good thing about the old Wheel Horses is there isn't much that can't be fixed. Tell us what you find.
