KC9KAS 4,741 #27 Posted October 10, 2014 Not tractor related but hey, sorta. I was at Home Cheapo yesterday picking up a few things work related and I needed a few washers. The washers I needed weren't much bigger than a quarter, they were about half as thick as a quarter yet they cost a quarter each! I've noticed prices sky rocketing on EVERYTHING lately.. Probably would have been cheaper to drill holes in quarters and make your own!

546cowboy 301 #29 Posted October 10, 2014 I gave up going to the hardware store long ago. The hardware stores here charge by the piece and to buy say ten bolts, nuts and washers will cost around $20. that's if they are 3/8" or less. I go to farm stores and buy by weight and try to keep my stock up. The other part about buying on-line is some of these guys charge outrageous shipping prices and you have to be sure you check that before you order. I actually contacted a guy about his shipping once and he said that's how he makes money on parts. Never again from me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dennist 139 #32 Posted October 10, 2014 The bigger picture here is everything everywhere is costing more....including to the Toro dealer. I wonder what it cost that toro dealer to open his door in the morning? -Oil/gas/tools/equipment/computers/inventory/taxes/insurances/power/salaries/licenses/his own pay/etc. If he sells at the original markup of say 16% on a 5-10 dollar item he would be making what .80 to 1.60 profit. IMO he can't afford to run his computer and take the time involved in searching for that kinda money. Ace Hardware gone due to the same issues? People go there to buy the nuts and bolts that gave the owner a few pennies profit, but when it came to larger purchases that would actually give them a little meat on the bone the consumer went to save the $50 at a box store....the same ones we complain about today that pack a few screws and bolts in plastic and cost us much more.
ScottR 5 #33 Posted October 10, 2014 I guess I'm lucky. Two Ace Hardware's near the house; one near work. Spend a lot of my lunch hours over there.
SousaKerry 501 #34 Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) I refuse to go to any hardware stare unless it's an emergency or to window shop. I am lucky as I work for a company that buys 1/4-20 bolts by the barrel. groundhog47 347 #35 Posted October 10, 2014 But if on SS few years back the powers that be said "...no increase in cost of living...therefore no increase in SS..." Wow I need to live where they live. Even generic foods, tractor parts and gas has gone way up for my memory of 3-5 years back and still see-sawing up and down. Man nowadays a WH would cost $10k. And still talk in the mill of doin away with penny, so will cost a nickel when that occurs. Wages, looks as if only mandate there is get more for less from somewhere outa US and let the US worker shrivel away for the non rising cost of living increase, Ok , I'll get down Ahem... everything is going out of site... 'cept wages. I'd say that's my two cents, but what good is two cents gonna do anyone?
chipwitch 73 #36 Posted October 10, 2014 Yup... I agree, groundhog, but shipping jobs oversees is only one (relatively small) part of the equation. It all comes back to greed. Can't stop that... but you can regulate just what a corporation is allowed to do to earn profits. Shipping jobs oversees is just one way corporations have been able to earn more for their shareholders, which is the ONLY responsibility a public corporation has... make profit. Unlike people, corporations have no conscience. The human conscience is our own personal built-in regulatory system. Take that away and an individual is by definition, a sociopath. Corporations are sociopathic in behavior. They function wholly without regard for human beings. That is what they are supposed to do. It's part of the fiduciary "contract" they have with their shareholders. Recently, I applied for credit through Trane for an aging A/C. The financing is through Wells Fargo... a huge bank. When did it become okay to charge 30% APR interest? Oh, and my credit is quite good. Just to be clear, lots of little mom and pop shops are small corporations... privately held corporations. I'm not talking about them. Many, if not most, conduct themselves by the golden rule, doing what's right by others, regardless of whether or not it costs them money to do so. Wall Street corporations do not. They will only "do right" by people IF they somehow think it will have a positive impact on the bottom line. I've worked in the financial industry. If any executive at a publicly held corporation were to conduct themselves in such a humanitarian manner, they would be summarily dismissed. Happens every day.
Geno 1,929 #37 Posted October 10, 2014 I spend a lot of time in the Fastenal clearance section. Already bought tons of stuff there since I got an account. Just bought a bunch of bolts the other day, here's an example - 3/8"-16 x 3/4" Yellow Zinc Finish Grade 9 Hex Cap Screw .08cents each.

Geno 1,929 #39 Posted October 10, 2014 If it's one thing I'm good at it is finding a deal. If I paid what most people want I wouldn't have much.
Tankman 3,518 #40 Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) I'm smack dab in the center of Home Cheapo and Lowes. Prefer Lowes for SS hardware. I did just purchase 3/8-16 x 1 carriage bolts and locking nuts, SS, for the dozer. One pint can of Never-Seez has lasted me for several years and probably another year too. I have three 48" dozers, all have SS hardware. Hey, maybe SS hardware will be a one time purchase? PS: Old used bolts 'n nuts, if serviceable, get dropped in a coffee can with oil. Cap off the coffee can. I sometimes need something and go diggin'. Edited October 10, 2014 by Tankman
