Parts prices are crazy

I am lucky enough to have a Toro dealer about 10 minutes from me, they also sell and service a lot of other brands, they have been there for close to 50 years, so they have a lot of NOS parts for Wheel Horse on hand. Went up today to get a couple of parts, asked about a headlight for my 1990 Classic, he brought one out and said are you ready for the price on this, $33.00 for a damn headlight, told him to keep it. While I was waiting the phone rang and the other clerk went back and got a part, heard him quote to a customer the price of a spark plug wire for an Onan twin, $36.00 each!!! This is where I look for generic parts when they don`t have to be original. Just had to rant a little, crazy prices!!!!

I consider it a miracle in today's world to be able to find original parts for a 24 year old tractor from a long out of the Wheel Horse business company. If Wheel Horse had not sold out and remained in business, many more parts would still be available. What gets me though is the fact that this dealer had a NOS part collecting dust on the shelf. He probably only paid about 10 cents on the dollar when he bought it, and now he has the nerve to try to sell it at highway robbery prices.

there are other ways of getting oem parts and not paying those prices. for example the headlight is just a GE 4411-1 sealed beam. the Onan spark plug wires are still available new under an Onan part number for half that price if i remember correctly. (even that was too much for a basic plug wire......)

 

research is your key here, this forum is a wealth of info with some searching, and the internet is full of oem parts with some searching too. most of the time the original equipment supplier still has their part number on the part and you can find sometimes the parts are still being manufactured.....

Thank goodness for NAPA.  I just RETURNED a $35 coil wire to my local Toro dealer when I found the same replacement part at NAPA for $23.

 

I was stupid enough to buy the original because the counter guy said (after my eyes bugged out  ) "That's a solid core wire, you can't get that at an auto parts store. They are all carbon core now."

 

I walked out thinking, daughter = college = $$ = WTF 

 

Of course I checked him and was saved by NAPA (eBay usually works too).  Toro dealers are like car dealers - avoid them unless they are the ONLY source for what you need.  You will pay

At TSC, I forget the exact price but a 4411 lamp is more expensive than the 4411 lamp in a housing. Last year I paid $7.59 for a sparkplug for my 520-H at my dealer. This year I am finally using some solid core 8mm Taylor wire that I have had from the '70s. I had trouble finding boots! Shop around.

I paid around $4.50 for the GE Halogen headlights. I posted it on here not too long ago. I bought 12 of them! Ya gotta look around. On Ebay I see people wanting more money for a used part than for buying it new. I guess they feel they're sitting on rare goldmines! Ridiculous. I paid $160 from one of the online parts store for a 314-8 muffler. It sucks. Hell they charge $1 for a 5 cent screw.

I guess it depends what side of the cash register you sit on.

Buyer screams foul when he pays seller $20 for a $2 part or service which buyer could have made / performed / located by himself.

Vendors proclaim commitment to the hobby when they sell something for $20 that was made for $2.

 

Guess the best bargain on the site is .......... me. Troubleshooting advice is always 100% free - for now anyways.

And if you think the prices for your 300, 400, 500, C's and B's are expensive... Try the "XI" line. I just keep stocking up when I am able to find bargins..... That may only consist of $10.00 off a belt or $5.00 off a bearing, but it is worth it.

NAPA, TSC, salvage yard, all have pricing well below dealers. 

 

Can't stand parts lists that read in part, "Bolt, TORO P/N 000000." Or, "Nut, TORO P/N 000000." Ridiculous pricing!

Not tractor related but hey, sorta. I was at Home Cheapo yesterday picking up a few things work related and I needed a few washers. The washers I needed weren't much bigger than a quarter, they were about half as thick as a quarter yet they cost a quarter each! I've noticed prices sky rocketing on EVERYTHING lately..

My local Lowe's has a fairly decent stock of stainless steel nuts and bolts now, but price checking yesterday for five 3/8-16 x 1" carriage bolts for my snow plow, and they were $1.05 each plus $.30 for a washer and $.85 for a lock nut. Same products from Boltdepot.com would have cost about $.75 for everything.

Holy crap, thanks for posting that!  I was a little freaked out by the hardware store price on stainless . . . boltdepot looks great, I'll try some of them!

I miss the old fashioned hardware store that I grew up with. Stuff stacked to the ceiling, a crabby old man telling you what you need. Nails bolts and screws were stored in buckets, weighed and put in a paper bag. Now everything is on a computer, and hung on hooks in plastic boxes. Combine the computers, plastic boxes and the fact that so many retailers think that they deserve to be part of the new landed gentry and you get prices like we have. 

 

And everything is so far away now. My best hardware options are HD and TSC, both of which are on the other side of town. A  twenty minute drive. There is a True Value (with crabby old men) in the next town over. I cannot remember the last time I saw an Ace Hardware.
