I've spent the last weeks of summer getting this little darling ready to go.

I got it off a JD from a scrapyard in Minnesota for $350.

400 pounds of solid steel, tempered glass windows,

WIper, defroster fan.  Mice ate the wiring, so I had to rewire, and added front floodlights.

The original cowling around the hood didn't fit due to the muffler.

I made a new one out of Lexan, and am waiting on molding from McMaster-Carr rated to 450 degrees.

I don't think the exhaust will melt that, but we will see.

Mounting was a PIA, but I was able to modify the front mounts by reinforcing the footrests.

Mounted to the frame, there was too much sway.  Moving the mounts farther apart solved that problem.

The rear sits on the seatpan for sway control, but most of the weight is in the rear hitch.

I am doing the best I can sealing out the weather, and the vinyl matting over the footrests will solve most of the problems when fully installed.

The tractor is a '94 520H that Jachady tipped me off to.

It was owned by the brother of a WH dealer in Madison.  430 hours with a nearly new 48 deck.

I figured it had, at a minimum, regular filter and fluid changes.

Unfortunately, as I tore into it, it became clear that there were issues, especially electrical.

Here is the fuse box.

I had to replace the fuse block with sealed holders.

Burnt out switches, burnt wires, fried bulbs and sockets.

I wondered if it was hit by lightning!

Tires were shot, so new shoes all the way around, including the tri-ribs on the front for steering in the snow.

Steering is going to be rebuilt next year, as I'm sure the bushings (at a minimum) are shot.

I pulled a couple hundred feet of fishing line off the front hubs, a few pounds of cut grass out of the tins, 

and discovered about 20% of the bolts holding tin to frame were missing!

The seat pan was supported by a 2x4, and the seat springs were broken (never seen that before!)

Getting the fuel system cleaned, and just running it for a while made a huge difference.

I think it sat for 2-3 years.  

It needs rust abatement, and paint, but I have everything in good working order.

I'm confident it will perform comfortably this winter, and if it behaves, I will make it pretty next year.

Good modification. Don't be worried about making it sealed up tight. You'll find that a little air flow is needed otherwise you'll think you're in a sauna.
