rick 245 #78 Posted September 9, 2014 Sometimes I can't help but add my two cents worth....the governors on our small engines are designed to hold the RPMs at level the operator sets. Generator engines are set to hold 60 cycles at the required voltage. Walk behind lawnmowers, self propelled or push, are limited to safe blade tip speed, which is 19,000 feet per second. An 18 inch cut mower is going to have a different maximum engine rpm setting than a mower with a 22 inch cutting width. How the blade tip speed relates to the max engine RPM on our WH tractors is a mystery to me. As I understand it, when one bought a WH, he could buy the tractor he wanted, and add the size deck he wanted. You see 310's with both 37 and 42 inch decks, my 314-8 handles my 48 and 42 inch decks with no problem, and I have seen 416's with 37 inch decks. All engines are not set at 3600 RPM, if you look at the Kohler spec #'s, the max speeds vary. it is probably a good rule of thumb, though. You can find the intended top speed by going to the Toro Solutions, where you plug in your model #. Click the specifications button, and your idle and high idle settings are shown. For instance, for a Model 71227 Toro 16-38 HXL, a hydrostatic trans 38" cut B&S 16 horse OHV rider, high idle is 3300 RPM, low idle is 1750 RPM. Models with Kohler engines show the factory prescribed speeds. My 314-8 shows a high of 3325, and a low of 1200. I have to assume the top engine RPM's on a dedicated lawn mower are related to maximum blade tip speed (a known factor). My head hurts thinking of the math needed to translate engine RPM to tip speed going through all the pulleys! cleat 7,030 #80 Posted September 9, 2014 I just recently rebuilt a 42 inch deck and helped my neighbor rebuild his 48 inch deck. Same spindles, different spindle pulleys. My 42 has smaller pulleys on the spindles but the same size pulley coming from the tractor and obviously the tractor PTO pulley is the same. All this means is the blades will spin faster on the 42.
