I'm trying to find a proper key for 6 and 8 speed input shafts. The shafts are 5/8" diameter. I have a key from a mid 70s 8 speed here. Appears to be stepped?? Looks like it should be 5/32 but there's several. How can I narrow it down? @stevasaurus @Racinbob @pfrederi
Racinbob 11,194 #27 Posted April 7, 2023 I'm not sure Eric. I was thinking 3/16" on the 5/8" shaft. I'm not sure what you mean by stepped.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,090 #28 Posted April 7, 2023 937221 key is a Woodruff 6 and the size is 5/32" x 5/8". The key is listed as a Hi Pro type in the parts lists and that is what you are describing. The extended ends prevent the key from trying to rotate when installing. I do not know if the #6 is a standard key or one with the extended ends making it a Hi Pro style. 1

Racinbob 11,194 #30 Posted April 7, 2023 I looked up the key for my 2005 8 speed. P/N 937108 which is 1/4" x 1 3/8" which likely is correct. I'm comfortable in saying that there isn't any of those stepped keys on the tractor.

Is there a specific point or need to be extension other than ease of installation?
Racinbob 11,194 #32 Posted April 7, 2023 I have no clue. I've never seen one before.
WHGuy413 2,756 #33 Posted Tuesday at 03:19 AM (edited) I’ve searched and searched here and the net and can’t find my answer. I’m looking for the axle woodruff key size for a 1966 model 856 with the 4 speed transmission. My older sons seems to have lost a key out of the axle/hub while plowing a figure 8 race track in my back yard 🤦🏼♂️. I see the 8 speed size on here numerous times just nothing for a 4 speed. Also especially since the axle looks good too. I snagged some from work. Turns out we have a whole woodruff key drawer in our hardware section. As my boss would say “the perks of this job are what ever you make of it”. Having hardware handy to grab from and borrowing equipment sure does have its bonuses 1

It could very well of been like that. There’s also the chance that the tire did come off and he didn’t own up to it. I would hope he would have told me so we could fix the situation if it had a issue
