putting oil in a wheelhorse b81-8hp transaxle

Recommended Posts

Sirs:

A neighbor of mine has a Wheelhorse B81-8hp lawntractor (I think its 3 speed forward and 1 reverse)  and asked me if Iknew how to drain the oil and put new fluid in the transaxle unit which I assume takes a std. rearend fluid.

There is no oil level dipstick on his transaxle but he thinks he knows how to drain the old oil by removing what he thinks is a drain bolt on the bottom of the unit.

My wheelhorses are later models which have a visible oil drain and oil level dipstick.

Hopefully there is someone with more knowledge than me that could help me give my neighbor the answer to his question.

Both of us would be greatefull.

Ken, Welcome to Red Square  :)

Do you know what year the B-81 is?   Does that transmission resemble one of your Wheel Horse transmissions?

I did a little searching around here, and the tractor could have one of the FOOTE or PEERLESS transmissions on it.  The FOOTE transmission is packed with grease and you would have to open it to clean it out.  I did not investigate the PEERLESS at this point  Some pictures of the transmission would help.  You may be able to see if it says FOOTE or PEERLESS on the transmission.

Why does he want to drain the transmission??  Let us know what you find.  :)

I edited this to change to maybe a PEERLESS instead of the EATON transmissions.  sorry

After some more searching...looks like the B-81 is either 1978 or 1979.

The 1978 Model# 82-08BP01 has an 8 hsp Briggs with a 4 speed PEERLESS 669 transmission.  The BP in the model# stands for Briggs engine and Peerless trans.

The 1979 Model# 92-08BF01 has an 8 hsp Briggs with a 6 speed FOOTE 4000-5 transmission.  The BF in the model# stands for Briggs engine and Foote trans.

Hope that helps.  :)

Here is a PDF of the Peerless 669...the drain plug is # 85 in the picture.  Click on the link...then click on download...then click on open...

Here is another link...it says the oil is SAE 80w90...
