Geno 1,929 #1 Posted August 23, 2014 Hi guys. Just bought a 1986 417A and the engine seems to have some chatter. Maybe I'm just used to the older Kohler single cylinders being quiet as a mouse. Is the 17 supposed to have any chatter? It sounds like valve train chatter to me.

boovuc 1,090 #3 Posted August 23, 2014 My Series I KT also has some valve noise. So do the Onans. If it sounds like a chorus of valves, your OK. If you start to hear some soloists in the chorus, then you have a problem.

pfrederi 17,518 #5 Posted August 23, 2014 (edited) Unlike some other K series singles KT 17s do not have adjustable valves. If they are getting noisy they are probably too short and the only repair is replacement (and that is pricey). Other than losing some power I wouldn't worry too much about it.
