Stolen Idea

Recommended Posts

I have to admit I have been stealing. I took an Idea from Martin on his 416 rebuild. I have been redoing a the steering on a 414 by converting it to a 520 setup with steering reduction for loader use. The idea he had on using flange bearing #6472 on the upper steering shaft is wonderful. It really makes it more sturdier and smoother. Way more support than the factory bushing. Difference to me is day and night. Thanks for the great idea Martin, hope the patent police do not come after me. I know there probably more Ideas out there, but this one is a cheap wonderful fix to a bad design.

Any details on this enhancement?  Pictures would be helpful if available.  I have the gear reduction steering on my 414 and have to take it apart 1 more time anyway and this sounds like a great improvement

I also stole Martin's idea on the flange bearing for steering enhancement.  All was going well until after 4 months, the the steering gear down below jumped a tooth (because I did not snug up the the big nut which holds the rack to the pinion).  Well I decided to put it back and of course the easiest way was to loosen the collar under the flange bearing, yank up on the steering wheel, rotate it one tooth and then push the steering column back down.  It did not work as I had planned.  Why?-because when I originally installed the steering column, I painted it up to just below where the flange bearing sits.  When I yanked it up, the painted area was now inside the flange bearing and there is just enough paint to bind the thing tight.  A lot of cussing ensued and I finally got it loosened by unbolting the bearing (now the steering column will drop into the bottom support) and then tapping the bearing from below with a really long screwdriver while my wife pushed down on the steering wheel from above.  Got out my emory cloth and sanded all that paint off the shaft under the bearing in case I ever have to do this again.  THEN, I snugged up the big nut which caused this problem in the first place! Live and learn.  But I do agree with MalMac, it was a great idea by Martin, my execution just was not up to Martin's standards!

I just ordered two of them from Jack's Small Engine. I am restoring several 416 tractors. I read Martins post many times and never thought of this. your post put the idea in my head.

Thanks

Nick

I just replied to Nicks thread about this idea.

Can't take credit for this one though. I did think of using the bushing long before it was done on mine, but I wasn't the first to do it on the forum. One day I was searching that bushing part number on the forum and found somebody else had used it on the upper shaft already. Not sure who it was or when it was done as it's hard for me to search right now, but I wasn't the first....

Just wanted to clear that up!

Well I will give you credit for at least finding it in the deep dark dungeon of past post. I had thought a long time ago of putting a flange bearing there but could never find one that would fit in there. The idea never occurred to me to try the #6472 in there. Man it sure makes a difference. Gives it a lot more bracing. So thanks to who ever thought of it. Martin thanks again for finding it and putting it on here.
