Solex 27 #1 Posted August 20, 2014 I am looking at buying this unit, but the transmission issue bothers me. It is an automatic, but you need to hold the gear stick in place to get it to move. If you push forward on the lever it it goes faster. Is this normal operation? Can't you expect to put it in gear and go without pushing on the stick? Could it be linkage, or a transmission issue? I am new to the Wheelhorse world.
Forest Road 594 #2 Posted August 22, 2014 Don't buy it
pacer 3,175 #3 Posted August 22, 2014 But, it could be as simple as adjustment --- these autos operate with movement of the stick by friction on or near the transmission and over time wear can loosen the friction points. There should be a pretty simple point to retighten this. Would need more info as to which tranny it has... By the way, an auto operates off the stick by 'the further you move it the faster it goes' in fwd and rev.
Ed Kennell 40,455 #4 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) If you have a Model 12-11BE01 1983 B-115 lawn tractor, it has an 11 HP Briggs with a 700-004 Eaton automatic. I don't have any experience with these mowers, But I would not buy any mower with a vertical engine. Edited August 22, 2014 by ekennell
Forest Road 594 #5 Posted August 22, 2014 If you're looking for your first horse just keep an eye out for a horizontal shaft engine. 4 speed trans (1,2,3 R) with hi/lo range. The belt comes off the right side of engine to the trans. And another belt comes off a cone looking thing, also on same side of engine to the mower deck. Stick with a single cylinder Kohler 10-16 hp and you can't go wrong. All these tractors are referred to as early B series, C series, 300, 400, 500 series.
Solex 27 #6 Posted August 22, 2014 Thanks Pacer, that makes sense about the friction points. The current owner of the tractor keeps one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the gear stick to keep it moving. I will try and find out the make and part number of the transmission. You can't hook up all the cool attachments to it!
Don1977 604 #8 Posted August 23, 2014 You have two reasons not to buy, vertical shaft engine and 700 Eaton automatic. Eaton 700 is not a heavy duty transmission.
Solex 27 #9 Posted August 23, 2014 Thanks for advice, I will continue my search and look for a 300 series tractor.
