8 speed noise question

Recommended Posts

The Raider 14 I just got has the 5073 limited slip 10 pinion 8 speed.    With the back wheels off, and tranny in gear, I feel and hear a noise when I turn one wheel.

The opposite wheel turns in the opposite direction of course. With the tranny in neutral, both wheels turn in the same direction and there is no noise.

Is this noise normal in the 5073  ?  I have drained and flushed it with diesel fuel with no change.

Sounds like it is in the differential Ed...axle gear, pinions or the spring.  Just did a thread on a 6 speed, 10 pinion, limited slip.  Take a look.  You 5073 works and looks like this 5060.  :)  The noise you hear is the spring rubbing on the pinions...I would think some noise is normal.  You may want to open it up to see if the spring is bent or broke, or if any teeth are missing on the pinions or axle gears.  You do not have to take out the rest of the gears in the trans, the differential will just pull right out.  Make sure you have the shallow or input shaft side of the trans down when you open it.

I'm with Steve, the noise is the pressure ring on the pinions.

Thanks Ed.  After watching the videos, you should have an idea on whether you need to open it or not...I'm guessing put in the 90 wt and see what happens.  The right amount of oil will quiet the trans if all is well.  :)

I filled it again with diesel and ran it slowly in a tight circle both ways and I could not hear any noise.   The diesel looked clean this time when I drained it.  I will fill w/90 and go.

:thanks:   both for your advise.
