4 pinion 8 speed transmission rebuild - what did they fit them on?

I'm confused...

I bought an 8 speed transmission from a 312-8 that was broken for spares. I couldn't see the axles as they had moved inwards, upon removal and splitting they are 1" and it's got a 4 pinion diff.

Did they fit these to 300 series or was it a swap by a past owner?

all the 308-8's 310-8's and alot of the 312's were the 1" axle 4 pinion 8-speeds...

The 8 speed transmissions come in 3 kinds.  the 5091, 103907,103916 and 103918 are 8 pinions with 1 1/8" axles...the 5073 is a 10 pinion, limited slip with 1 1/8" axles,,,and the 5086 had 4 pinions with 1" axles.  The 5086 trans was used in the 1972 Raider 8 and 10...and in the 1973 8 and 10 HP no name horses.    The brake drum is mounted on the cluster gear shaft in all these transmissions.

I know this has probably been ask before ( probably many times ) but what are, if any,  the  do's and don'ts with the 1 inch axle tractors compared to the 1 1/8  as far as pushing snow , plowing garden etc  ?

 

Also wondering why the 300 series were produced with the smaller axles .

I really don't think things like you're mentioned are any problem with the 4 pinion, 1" transmissions. One of my tractors up north was a 84 GT1100 (the gray ones). It was the tractor I used to push the snow off my 800' of driveway. We had some nasty snows too since we were right in the lake effect area off Lake Michigan. Since it was more fun to push snow the only time I got the 16hp out to blow it was when it was just too much. I also plowed (dirt) with it. The tiller went on the 16hp because the axle hitch was different on mine. As far as why they made them. I'd say is was just a cost thing.

These are all "garden tractors" and as such are very capable of moving snow, plowing a garden and anything else that they were designed to do.  When you start making pulling tractors out of these horses...that is when you get into the number of pinions and the diameter of the axle.

Thanks for the replies ,  I'm getting ready to fit my 310-8 into the worker of the bunch ( since restoring the C-101 in my AV ) I never even gave the smaller axles a thought until I read this thread .   It's going to share mowing duties with the 315-8 plus plowing and pushing snow - figured I better ask.

Awesome work guys, my C-161 has a 103916 as I've borrowed that transmission for project bendy. This transmission will be rebuilt and become the front trans for bendy. I'm sure it's more than up to the job!

so I have both 1 inch and 1 1/8 tractors,i find the 4 pinion 1 inch axle pushes snow better than the 1 1/8,dont know if its the tires or what but the 1 inch works great,ive had it since new in 1986,and its been amazing and done a lot of extreme hard work
