Hodge71 664 #1 Posted August 15, 2014 (edited) K guys its time to order tires for the 416 Im building my Dad. I would like to go taller but not necessarily wider as I would need to do 520 wheels then. How big can I go in the front and back without hitting the fender or rubbing the 48" mower deck when turning? The reason Im going bigger is my Dad likes his grass high and even cutting with the deck up with the factory tires I only used to get 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 inches with this tractor/mower combo. I think the hydraulic lift has something to do with that. His lawn is religiously cut at 4 or 4 1/4 in the summer. Thanks for any suggestions...oh and also it will be turfs all around no ags or tri ribs for him Edited August 15, 2014 by hodge71

Theroundhousernr 589 #3 Posted August 15, 2014 There is a post a few weeks back with a similar issue. Only way for a higher cut is to increase the size of the wheel on the mower deck. That's all I am saying... Good luck with your endeavor.

That's all I am saying... Good luck with your endeavor. I am familair with that method and I honestly have never found an aftermarket gauge wheel that works the way OEM sized wheels do. Its not an option as far as I'm concerned. That why Im going bigger on the actual tracor tires

Kegler 68 #6 Posted August 15, 2014 If I'm not mistaken the deck is supposed to be run down, withe the gauge wheels in the ground. If that is true then the tire size would make no difference.

If that is true then the tire size would make no difference. I understand what youre saying. But my Dad had been mowing his 1 1/4 acres this way for over 20 years now and its a gorgeous piece of property. Its the only yard in his whole area thats green all summer long. Im sure its because he mows at 4 inches. The deck doesnt scalp and mows perfectly level. it seems as if we derailed here somewhere and everyone would sooner tell me that Im wrong and not answer the question of tire size. I guess its moot at this point. I couldnt get any input so Im ordering 24x9.50 for the back and 18x6.5 for the front. Whatever happens...happens...oh well Edited August 15, 2014 by hodge71
Martin 2,131 #8 Posted August 15, 2014 getting back to your tire sizes..... just keep in mind that some tires are undersized considerably today, just because it says 23 or 24 inches doesn't mean you will get that, and different manufacturers can be shorter than others on the same number. check the manufacturers specs thoroughly, many have been bitten assuming they are getting a certain height tire. most manufacturers have specs for diameter on their web sites...... Martin 2,131 #9 Posted August 15, 2014 heres a good one for carlisle.... http://www.carlisletirestore.com select the style of tire and they have a chart listing mounted diameter, make sure the wheel size is comparable to what they list mounted, (width etc)

Hodge71 664 #11 Posted August 15, 2014 Thanks you for the info Martin and I didnt even pay attention to that Sparky. Looks like I better do a bit more research before I pull the trigger. Another day isn't going to make a huge difference in time. Back to the drawing board....
Tankman 3,518 #12 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) Thanks Martin, like the chart you linked to. Briefly, 23" x 12" mounted tire was indeed 23 1/4" The 24" x 12" mounted = 23" Tire size to raise the deck doesn't do the trick. Sounds like the rear lift rod on the deck needs adjusting. Tankman 3,518 #13 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) Larger Ø deck wheels (not rollers) would work but might they hit the rear tires? http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/arnoldreg%3B-8-in-steel-wheel-60-lb-load-rating Edited August 16, 2014 by Tankman
aaubrey96 0 #14 Posted August 21, 2014 I have 25inch tall and I want to say 10 inch wide tires (stock width I can't remember if 10 or 12) on my 414 and the rub on the guide wheel on my 42inch deck but I think you'd be able to clear them with the bigger deck. But mine are ag tires with 3lbs of air in them for traction on the hills Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
