K181S Crank Bearing replacement

Recommended Posts

mr_speegs

So...my 1966 876 Wheel-A-Matic snapped a rod a number of months ago and I've been stumbling through the engine rebuild since. I think I'm finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel, but I may have finally gone in a little over my head. The connecting rod broke as a result of (or cause of) two worn crank bearings. I've removed the bearing plate side, but am a little apprehensive at what I'm seeing on the PTO side. The large valve/timing gear is blocking me from knocking the remaining crank bearing out. Is there any way of me getting that bearing out short of complete engine disassembly?

Nope

Are you sure the bearings are bad, very uncommon. More like lack of lube.

Well, I know that the oil got too low, likely through bad seals. That's the obvious cause. The bearings are definitely spun too, given they way they sound and feel.

Looks like I'm in for a long weekend...

Anyone know how to remove the camshaft from a K181? The Kohler service manual isn't exactly clear. It states as follows:

1. Drive the camshaft pin (an cup plug on bearing side plate) out of the crankcase from the PTO side.

2. Remove the camshaft pin, camshaft, and shim(s) on bearing plate side of camshaft.

My issue is that, to my novice eyes, there is no obvious external means by which to access or dislodge the camshaft. What am I not seeing or understanding?

On a similar note, does anyone know what to look for to find the timing mark on the crankshaft? I know it's difficult for these engines, but I'm not positive what I am looking at is correct.

The camshaft pin runs through the length of camshaft, and is secured by being snug in the hole on the PTO side of the crankcase. In the unlikely event that it were to work loose, the bearing plate will keep if from coming completely out.

Remove the bearing plate on the flywheel side. Locate where the 1/2" camshaft pin is on the pto side. Using a hammer and a 7/16" or 15/32" pin driver, tap the camshaft pin out in the direction of the flywheel. Be careful when you take it completely out, as there are one or two spacer shims that will fall out from between the cam shaft and crankcase. The timing mark is usually a dimple. I will post pictures as soon as I find them.

Location of camshaft pin on PTO side of K181. Drive it out from this side.

Thanks a lot, rmaynard! I will hopefully follow up with a successful update and be on my way to a running engine again.

Oh, and one more thing...do I have to worry about any timing issue between the camshaft gear and governor gear above?

my 1067 stopped moving; limited slip had worn out long ago;  now input pully is turning , but tractor doesnt move --- very slight motion forward or backward if on level ground with no resistance.  Enough to tell me shift lever is actually changing gears.
I suspect input shaft woodruff keys but might be something worse ... i am interested in perhaps buying a new, used,or rebuilt  transaxle if someone has one they would part with.  And any advice on opening up the transaxle and looking inside .  Or where i can find parts to rebuild it myself...

Got my parts from Lincoln, governor gear and shaft. So, I started assembly today. Took me three tries to get that two-piece crank in, thankfully it was within spec when done so I didn't have to take it back apart to shim!  Got the crank in, lapped valves and ground to spec. I found this old aluminum fixture from a hospital bed oxygen filter mount and squared it up on belt sander that worked really well on valve stem. Progress at last, will finish up soon. Hope it runs well when done! Going to put it on my 653.

Okay engine Guru's, newbie needs some help! Rebuilding older 8 horse and I am new to small engines. I have rebuilt numerous car/truck engines but never a kohler k. I have researched all available videos and really appreciate the small block tutorial by Prondzy. I am at reassembly stage, so my question is, related to timing marks. I have camshaft with centrifical advance which has a groove or line on spacer that engages pawls. does this groove line up with pointed part of casting on inner rim of gear? Also, there is a groove on opposite side of camshaft gear that I believe should align with pointed mark on casting of crankshaft. See attached pictures. Thanks for any help. Just want to be sure!

Starting a slow restore to a C-160, Today she got a new fuel tank, and different tires. Started it up and went for a ride under her own power, first time since '08.
Next comes finding the fuel leak, looks like a bad hose. and maybe some cleaning of the oily parts.

Hello everyone!  Got a real puzzle here!  Husband has visited with some on here by phone, but he is getting really frustrated!  Can anyone help us with this tractor!  It will be mowing fine, then start dying off and on at different time frames!  Temperature out side sometimes seems to play a part but could be coincident.  So he has put more and more money in this and not fixed the issue!  A list of what he has done thus far!
      new Fuel line
      new condensor
      new points
      new carb
      new plug wire
      new spark plug
      Used fuel pump
      new coil
      new switch
      new battery
      new head gasket
soaked it with marvel mystry oil
      soaked it with sea foam
removed fuel tank cleaned and blew out
cleaned sediment bowl. Brand new one is on its way
      changed oil
      all 4 brand new belts
