JimD 3,345 #1 Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) This is a game just to pass some time. The challenge is to find some information about what your home state is famous for or things that were invented or began in your state first. Please post a click-able link to the information. I think we'll all be surprised at what we find out about our state. Here's mine for Ohio.. http://www.movoto.com/oh/ohio-facts/ Have fun. For our Euro Members, you can use you country, county, parish or any locality within your country where you live. Edited July 23, 2014 by JimD

Wow, I didn't realize we had such a renowned historian in our midst. But in the interest of continuing the thread for those to whom it might be enlightening, allow me.. shallowwatersailor 3,213 #6 Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) Here is my home state, the "Land of Lincoln." All are correct but numbers 34 and 48 are out of date. Number 34 is actually famous for flooding the city in 1992, and the post office moved to another facility in 1997 - but still cost over 2 million dollars a year to maintain! Illinois also has the most bureaucracies per state in the nation. http://www.50states.com/facts/illinois.htm#.U9Am_bH6vkO Edited July 23, 2014 by shallowwatersailor

RMCIII 838 #9 Posted July 23, 2014 John, I had no idea you also were once from Illinoise, wait, there is no "noise" in Illinois! I was raised just 20 minutes north from where Ol' Ronald Regan was born., In addition to that, the Lincoln memorial also resides in the same city. Dixon Illinois. Oh-yeah, just one more small fact. Grand Detour, which is only 15 minutes south from where I lived, has a John Deere historic site, on where it all began...... http://www.deere.com/wps/dcom/en_US/corporate/our_company/fans_visitors/tours_attractions/historicalsite.page? Rob Ask Bob, I don't sound like I'm from the "Old Line State." To Steve, I probably sound normal! And it's Chi-caw-go. When I was a kid, we use to tent camp in the state parks (White Pines and Lowden) by Oregon. I also had to go to Polo one time for business. Ken B 3,164 #13 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) What a cool thread! I'm from Danbury, Connecticut. While Connecticut may be known as the Constitution State I believe there are a few other things that put this State on the map. Sadly, neither one of these things are still with us and both of these took place right in my home town, Danbury. #1 Danbury was known as the Hat Capitol of the world. Way way back in the day just about every single guy out there wore a hat and Danbury supplied them. http://www.hattales.com/discover/hat-nostalgia/hatting-in-danbury-connecticut/ #2 The Great Danbury State Fair. This wasn't just your normal little country fair that only locals from surrounding towns attended. People from ALL OVER came to the Great Danbury Fair. My parents house was about ten miles from the Fair Grounds. I can remember as a kid every summer on Saturday night's laying in my bed hearing the sweet sounds of those V-8 race engines roaring around the Racearena! Music to my ears. I was only 13 when it was closed but naturally I went every year since I was an infant so I have some great memories. Poor old man Leahy I'm sure rolled over in his grave at least a few times when his family sold it only to be bulldozed for a shopping mall. I worked in that Mall for a few yrs. on the maintenance crew. Working late at night was often very interesting to say the least. I can remember hearing very loud music that was clearly not from this day and other things such as, horse's hoove's trotting and an insane amount of laughter. I can remember asking the guy working next to me where the hell are the horse's? All he told me was don't worry, you'll get used to it... If you have some time too kill here is a video too watch.. Racinbob 11,034 #15 Posted July 24, 2014 We may live in Florida now but we still consider Indiana our home state. I don't think I need a link to point out what Indiana is famous for. WHEEL HORSES WERE INVENTED IN INDIANA! Anything else is just trivial.
RMCIII 838 #16 Posted July 24, 2014 Ask Bob, I don't sound like I'm from the "Old Line State." To Steve, I probably sound normal! And it's Chi-caw-go. When I was a kid, we use to tent camp in the state parks (White Pines and Loudin) by Oregon. I also had to go to Polo one time for business. White Pines and Lowden were/are the parks for summer camp for kids. Spent 5 summers there. Blackhawk is finally getting redone. Needed it. You could no longer take the stairs up to look out his eyes. Orgeon is where I was raised. Where my parents still reside. Rob
