New to me Raider 10 (kinda)

Recommended Posts

Hey all. Just picked up a raider 10 for $100! Runs nice but the wiring harness needs some love, needs an ignition, switches, etc (if anyone has some used parts I'd be willing to talk). I think the biggest problem is the motor. Runs great but its not original (hence the wiring issues). I believe these came with Techumseh or Kohler. This one has a Briggs with an electric clutch. I'm curious of the vintage of the tractor itself and the vintage of the Briggs motor. Also, is this the correct hood? I had to modify the bracket for it to fit. Thanks!!

Curious to know if its worth fixing up. The kid expressed interest in using it around the yard. He loves my 310-8 but I had to make him some platform shoes with some old sneakers and a couple 4x4's screwed to the bottom. This is a better size for an 8yr old.

That model # comes back as a 1970. Originally came with a Tecumseh HH100-115095B engine.

The Briggs engine is a 1970.

Bringing it back to life depends on how big of a smile you can handle on your childs face.

Toro thinks the model 1-6041 is a 1970 model but it is a 1969. Here is the manual

The mistake originates in this service bulletin. For some reason the 1969 and 1970 models are combined.

How about this; it actually looks like a 71 800 Special with a 70 Raider 10 dash. Has the front pulley system and motor from an 800. Sound right?

AG's!! ::drool:: I like. You wouldnt know where to get a voltage regulator and ignition at a reasonable price, would you? I was thinking about going with the Delco unit 1118988 (amazon $30) and then using an off the shelf solonoid and ignition ($30 total from TSP). I think it'd be easier than trying to source one of the high amperage/cost units that came on the tractor. Thoughts?

Does look like it.  Let's see a shot from the back.  The hood isn't notched for the air cleaner though. :dunno:  :confusion-confused:

I'd be glad to help 'ya if I could but figure there are people waaay more qualified on here .

When I got her she was in pretty good running condition with a couple exceptions that folks on here helped out with .

Just needed the basics & some shine & polish,

Thats a nice looking tractor!! I got hooked on these a couple years back. Bought my first house and needed a mower. I went to all the big stores and it all seemed like the same cheap, stamped steel/plastic garbage. My uncle had a couple of old twins, one was a GT and I believe the other was a C series. My Grandfather always had WH's. So, I looked on the local craigslist and found an 88 310-8 for $600. Since then I added chains, weights, used plow. I cant stop that thing. I always wanted something older to beat around on, found this cheap. Hopefully I dont regret the purchase.. Parts list is growing.

The 800 Special used a similar engine with different spec number. Here is the wiring diagram

I can't think of another Wheel Horse that used a B&S engine with starter/generator.

Opps - 1972 800 Auto model 1-0451 used the same engine as the 800 Special

The 74 A-90 Special used the same spec engine as your new Raider 10 :confusion-confused:  :dunno:

Mistake somewhere.

Toro lists the A-90 engine as model 109434-0638-01 and should be 190434 for 8hp - likely a typo.

If you go to a service bulletin

the A-90 listed as using 190434-0825-01

Always figured Toro got their info from this bulletin because mistakes in it were carried over to what they have posted.

This time it's a whole number so who knows?

Wow so it seems it could be an A-80, 800 Special or 800 auto? Well, whatever it is, I got it running. Used an off the shelf ignition switch and starter relay, wired it up myself. The 8HP Briggs seems much smoother then the 10HP Kohler on my 3-10. Now I just need to get a belt for the mower deck and have at it!

Thanks for the help all.

Don't forget ebay, and our parts vendors here...   :handgestures-thumbsup:

both could be your friend to help keep this old   :wh: going.

Strongly second Craig's suggestion about the vendors here. Great bunch of Joes, and their parts are fine quality, and good price. Glen Pettit has a wide selection of knobs and other doodads to spruce up the tractor, Kelly Hollister probably has the largest garden tractor boneyard in the U.S., Terry (vinylguy) is the decal man, and bmaynard is getting back into brake bands. Just go to the main page of Red Square, and scroll to the bottom, the vendors are listed there.

And of course, you can't tootle around the yard on your Horse without a Red Square hat, so pay a visit to the store here, and fetch a couple hats from Karl our moderator. Then you can tool around in style.

And no, I am not paid for this plug, just have been very pleased with these folks whenever I have dealt with them.

Thanks all. Me and the kid were racing around the yard this morning. He fits better on the 800 but still loves the 310. Dead heat every lap.
