3/4" wheel shims

Recommended Posts

C-85

I am repainting the front wheels on my 2 black hood tractors and when I went to take off the wheels I noticed some slop.  So I'd like to get some more wheel shims and I'm having a hard time finding a place to buy them :banghead:.  Does anyone know of a good place to find a good assortment (different thicknesses) of 3/4" x 1 1/4" shim washers?

When I was a dealer we had a whole box of these that were extra's that came with the new tractors, but that was a long time ago and I don't have 'em anymore, DARN! :ranting:

Ace is a good bet but they didn't have any at the store here. WW Grainger has a great selection.

Any larger True Value hardware store has stacks of those little drawers of Hillman Hardware nuts, bolts, unusual fittings, etc., etc.    It depends on the size of the store as to how big a selection they have.  Luckily, my local store has a huge selection I draw from constantly.

  Good luck,   Jim

Don't know 'bout thrust washers (see my earlier post) but, I use Lowes hardware.

Stainless steel bolts, stainless locking nuts and always Never-Seeze° or ThreadLocker on the threads. Almost all my hardware is stainless.

I throw the rusty bolts in a large coffee can with oil, and a lid. Saving for a day just in case.

I know I used to be able to find them at Lowes, Ace/True Value, etc. but not around here. I use a lot of stainless as well. I'll buy a few items at Lowes but their prices are ridiculous. I've placed several orders to Albany County Fasteners in NJ. I can get a bag of 25 of a given size for well under half of what Lowes charges. Extras are always good. I'm going to check them out for arbor shims.

You can avoid trying to take up slop with shims by taking up any slop with a split shaft collar.

And you won't have to trust to a flimsy C clip to hold the wheel on. I switched to these collars

some years ago on my two "C" chassis; one of the niftiest ideas obtained here in Red Square.

I've shimmed three of my tractors spindles and steering blocks. I cut my own with shim stock and a shim punch set. :twocents-02cents:

Did I mention I work in a tool and die shop.   Nothing feels better than slop free steering.

After searching "almost every where", I found them at Grainger. You can check the catalog on line for numbers.

A 3/4 inch SAE washer can be used as a wheel shim if there is enough space for a washer thickness. The SAE has a smaller outside diameter than a regular washer. I thing a 3/4 inch SAE is 1-1/4 outside diameter. They could be found at any good hardware store.
