RMCIII 838 #1 Posted July 3, 2014 Here we go again. Picking this up from the winter. If you remember I had asked about the belt fraying on my 42" single stage snowblower. Well, here are, some photos. I did what the service manual called for in set-up when it discussed the belt pully. Making sure it was flush with the shaft. I tried it both flush and now where it is sitting on the shaft. If I make it flush, the belt has an even worse "on - off angle". I compared the mule pullys to one brand new. Measurments are the same so the mule drive pullys are not bent. I am at a complete loss on this. I know if I run it like this, it will chew this belt through, in a matter of weeks. Any thoughts? Rob
oldlineman 1,481 #2 Posted July 3, 2014 not sure but from the pictures looks to me that the belt is on the wrong mule pulleys, v should be on the v pulley and flat should be on the flat.I may be wrong but that is what i thing i see from your pictures. In other words swap the belt on the mule. good luck
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #3 Posted July 3, 2014 Rob, Here are pictures of mine. It almost appears that mine has more angle to the mule sheaves. John

oldlineman 1,481 #5 Posted July 3, 2014 looks like to me that his belt is on the wrong mule pulleys v is on flat and flat is on the v that is what it looks like to me.
oldlineman 1,481 #6 Posted July 3, 2014 I would think that the blower pulley should be centered on the two mule pulleys.

doc724 925 #8 Posted July 3, 2014 I just walked out in the garage to look at mine. The flat side (back of the belt) should be on the idler pulley (the flat one). The V side of the belt should be in the v groove pulley. On my blower, the idler is on the bracket that is attached to the big spring (that keeps tension on the belt). Rob, I agree with John, the belt is just reversed.

RMCIII 838 #10 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) I will take a look. But looking at John's belt, it has a slight angle to the "on-off" also. Not nearly as bad as mine though. Photo is now showing belt reversed, but as you can see, still has a moderetly severe angle coming off the bottom of the pully. As you see, I put the pully back flush, as the service manual states. Rick_in_CT 156 #11 Posted July 4, 2014 Rob, Comparing your pictures to John's, I see that the drive pulley on John's is mounted with the hub/set screws to the outside of the pulley, where yours are to the inside. This may be altering the alignment of the drive pulley to the mules. I also notice that your belt is sitting very deep in the pulleys. This is either due to wear from last winter, or it is the incorrect width belt. John's belt is sitting up high in the pulley as expected. The drive power from a V-belt is achieved off the sides of the belt, not the bottom surface. Belts should not bottom out in a pulley. From your original pictures was the belt ever run in the "flipped over" position it was originally shown in? If it was, this would certainly damage the belt as it was run inverted in the V-pulley. Lots of heat and wear would have been generated. Now is the time to get this figured out, I recall your frustration last winter. Rick
RMCIII 838 #12 Posted July 4, 2014 I see that also, but both the Dealer Tech Manual and the Toro Installation Instructions show the pully with the (2) SQ. HD. Setscrews facing inward on the shaft. Photos attached.
Rick_in_CT 156 #13 Posted July 4, 2014 Rob and John, can each of you post your snow blower model numbers, lets see if we are comparing apples to apples. Rick
buckrancher 2,679 #14 Posted July 4, 2014 I would turn your pulley around manuals are known to not always be correct and common sense would be to put the pulley in the best position for alinement Brian

buckrancher 2,679 #16 Posted July 4, 2014 some of your problem could be the shaft needs to be moved towards the chain sprocket is the shaft at the outside of the chain sprocket? Brian
RMCIII 838 #17 Posted July 4, 2014 Chain and sprocket are aligned correctly. Used a string and washer to make sure the sprocket on the shaft was aligned correctly with the auger sprocket. Rob
doc724 925 #18 Posted July 4, 2014 Hello all. I just made another trip to the garage. I have a 79365, SN 8900363. I just took 3 pix, all looking from the backside into the pulley area. I also confirmed that my drive pulley is flush mount with the set screws on the inside (closest to the support bearing). Although I resized the images, I cannot figure out how to put them in the post, so I will send a PM to Rob. My conclusion is that Rob now has it correct and with a new Toro belt, there should be no problems.
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #19 Posted July 4, 2014 Finally got back to the computer again. I have not used this yet as I just picked it up a month ago. In fact, I probably won't get to it until fall with all the other projects to work on! My numbers are: Model 79365 S/N 891027.
RMCIII 838 #20 Posted July 4, 2014 Got the photos. Thanks Don. I have another belt that I am going to try on for "Size". It is the other belt I purchased from Sohars. I started using it once I saw how bad the other belt(one in the photos) was getting. It also began to fray though.... Photos will be posted. Rob
RMCIII 838 #21 Posted July 4, 2014 As a say, persistence pays off! Remove the belt pully, found out that the inside bearing had a broken weld, that allowed the bearing housing to wobble slightly. I'm thinking this is what was causing the belt to fray because the actual shaft was then wobbling. Rob
RMCIII 838 #22 Posted July 5, 2014 The Culprit. Not 100% sure this is going to solve the issue, but it certianly is a great start. Rob

In fact, I probably won't get to it until fall with all the other projects to work on! My numbers are: Model 79365 S/N 891027. @doc724 @RMCIII @shallowwatersailor what model WH are you guys using the blower number 79365 on? Sorry for resurrecting the dead post, but I'm confused. That (and 79366) is the model number that supposedly fits a 5xi series. I thought they were different?
