Look at the pinned thread at the top of this forum.  That will get you SKF seal numbers and bearing #s that any auto parts store should be able to get.  You could also try motion industries or any local bearing supply house.

:text-yeahthat: The axle seals are still available from Toro but pricy. Almost $20 a piece.

If the old 4-speed has 1" axles, the generic seal is a CR-9815 or SKF-9815 or NAPA NOS-9815. The NAPA price is around $5.00

Bob, will that seal work in a 5010? I sprung for the seals from Toro that were like the originals because I wasn't aware that I could use the seals that slip inside (if they work).

No Bob...you need the cap seals for the #5010 transmission.  Only TORO has them and they are about $20 apiece.  It is a different seal for the 2 piece transmissions.  SKF 9815 for 1" axles and SKF 11050 for the 1 1/8" axles.  The cap seals #83-2840 only fit the 3 piece transmissions...the axle housing is round on those trans and square on the 2 piece.  :)

Got ya. I'm sure we even talked about this when I had mine apart. I know I've replaced a few seals and had to do the picking thing to get the old ones out but it's been over 15 years ago. I guess I assumed that wheelhorse66 may have had the three piece when he said 'old 4 speed'. It's too bad the 9815's won't work in the three piece. You can get six or seven of them for the price of one 1257.

You are right Bob, wheelhorse66 did not say what tractor the trans was in...him being a member for almost a year and 157 posts...you would think that he would know what information to put in a post so we do not have to guess if he knows the difference between a 3 piece/2piece...3 speed/4 speed transmission.  :soapbox:

That's the first time I have used that emoticon...kind of feels good...we should not have to guess at what is being posted and asked...put in enough information so we can give you an intelligent answer from the start.  This is not about a new guy, but someone who has been around for a year should know better. :eusa-think::orcs-cheers:

I don't think Steve was mad, just a little annoyed. So many people ask questions that are vague, and don't include sufficient information to answer properly. The folks here on this forum really do want to help, but those of us that ask the questions need to make sure we give as much information as we can to assist them. You know it is a 4-speed, but the gurus here don't know what type of 4-speed it is. And yes, it does matter what tractor it is in, as that information can help to pin down the tranny type.

Again, I don't think anyone is mad, they just want as much information as possible so that they can accurately help. Quite frankly, i am surprised that they are as accommodating and polite as they are. I see so many questions such as: "Does anyone know where I can get the manual for (insert tractor or attachment model here). I just inherited it from Aunt Millie?" Invariably, the answer is a link to the Manuals section for the specific machine, instead of: "Why don't you scroll down to the documents section on the main page and look it up yourself you dolt!"

Like jdleach said, nobody is mad. We just don't want to tell you wrong. If we were to assume you're talking about a 4 speed made in 1966 (based on your user name) then the seals rmaynard mentioned will work. If you have the older 3 piece case then they won't as Steve said. I chimed in because I just finished one of the older 3 piece units and spent over $40 for two of the seals shipped. I got to thinking that just maybe, in spite of being installed differently, the lower cost seals might work but no, they won't. I'm not an expert like these other guys. I just wanted to verify so if I ever get asked in the future I don't lead someone astray and tell them they need $20 seals when $3 seals can be had. :)

wheelhorse66...I was not mad at all.  You have to remember that when you start a thread, there are a ton of people that want to contribute and offer help...also, a lot of people will read your thread.  If the wrong information gets put in your thread, because not enough information was given, it can lead to confusion and even someone going out and buying the wrong parts.  I would not have even posted in your thread, because rmaynard had already answered your question, but came in to qualify what RacinBob posted.

wheelhorse66...I just went back through the transmission section and re--read all of your threads.  For one thing, you never seem to put in all the information needed to get an answer right off the bat...almost in every thread, someone is asking you for more information.  For another thing, you never seem to come back in and say if the information you received, for nothing, helped...nor have you ever said "Thank You for your help".     :soapbox:   I am not attacking you...it is just that a little manners would go a long way. :eusa-think:
