252H

We own a 252-H and today we drove it around- and things were fine (both forward and in reverse). After we heated the transmission fluid up we removed the drain plug (bottom side) and reservoir cap (white) topside. We proceeded to drain all the fluid out and did so successfully. Once we began to re-fill the reservoir it only took about an 1/8th to 1/4 of a quart. Per the directions we ran new 20 weight through the reservoir with both the drain plug and cap off until it stopped draining. Once the reservoir wouldn't accept any more oil (which again was about an 1/8th to a 1/4 of a quart, we screwed the cap back on, started up the tractor, waited about 2 minutes..........and the tractor would not move, neither forward or backward. Can anyone tell us if the system has to be pressurized in some way to engage the transmission, if so how, and why the transmission took nowhere close to what the manufacturer's specifications called for. WE DID not remove what was called a "Vent Plug" at anytime during the above steps, but is a step listed in the manual. Is their a filter for the transmission? Normally the tractor cannot be pushed but after adding the fluid it could be pushed freely (what does this mean). Please help we need to cut the grass bad, thank you very much.

Not familiar with the 252 but you needed to put in the same amount you took out. If you didn't, your going to have problems. If the manual states the vent plug should be removed, then by all means, remove it. One of the reasons you may not be getting anything into the reservoir is trapped air and the vent plug is most likely there to burp the system as you add fluid.

Once we remove the vent plug ( which i just did) what should we do next?

I don't have a manual for the tractor you are working on and I don't know what transmission is in it unfortunately.

If you have an owners manual, it should state in it somewhere how much fluid capacity it holds. I always measure how much motor oil or transmission fluid I remove from anything I'm working on. That way, I know how much I minimally need to put back in.

Normally a vent plug, which you removed, is used to allow air to escape so you can add faster so the opening your pouring into doesn't burp constantly making a mess. Please do be careful to clean all the areas off around the fill opening and the vent plug. You do not want any dirt or debris to fall into that reservoir.

The reservoir could only hold a little amount of hydro fluid as a reserve. You may need to add your hydro fluid directly to the case. Again, without a manual and not seeing this tractor, I can't help you much.

I know for a fact there are a few members that have 252's or 257 H's that can be more help to you. Hopefully they will chime in.

Good Luck!

It had the eaton 7! I was able to resolve the issue by removing the vent plug. It went down very slow. It took around 6 hours and runs excellent! Also changed the rear end fluid and it was bone dry! Nothing came out. He is one very happy 252. Thank you very much for the help! I used a shop vac to clean all the garbage from around the seat pan and deck and greased all the grease fittings. I also have a 520-H that is having a problem driving. Within the next week or 2 i will be posting another post about wondering how to fix it. Im glad i came to the right wheel horse website!
