C-81 Transmission

Recommended Posts

I have a c-81 eight speed which was purchased new by my dad in 1981 or so.  Has been a fantastic and trouble free machine. I repowered the tractor this spring with a NOS k-181 but now have developed a transmission problem. Transmission would not stay in high range and now whether in the high position or low position all I can get is low range.  Is it likely that the shift fork is broken ? How difficult of a job is splitting one of these transmissions?

Also there is a parts c-160 not too far away-are the transaxles interchangeable? Thinking that perhaps it is worth having a parts machine about.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Sounds like the shift fork for the range selector. On my B-111 six speed it was only made out of plastic so it is possible that it could have broken or bent. The only way to find out is to break open the trans. Just be careful and make sure trans fluid or grease doesn't spill everywhere if its been overfilled. Transmissions on wh's seem to be pretty easy to work on just make sure you take a lot of pictures and while you have it open give it a nice cleaning and refill with fluid.

Hope this helps!

Here is a link that shows the process fairly well.  There are a couple more links that will help in the Red Square Links section and then click on Greatest Red Square Posts.  :)
