Kesboy 0 #1 Posted June 19, 2014 Hi everyone, I just joined and need advice please. I've just got a Commando 8 to restore and have excessive play in the steering. I know it needs track rod ball joints replacing but there is a lot of free play at the steering shaft gear/ quadrant area. Are these parts common to any other model? I see a few on eBay but not for my model. I am in the UK and can't find anywhere to source spare parts. Thank you.
AMC RULES 37,146 #3 Posted June 19, 2014 For the parts you need... try placing a wanted ad in the classifieds. Part numbers will help... do you know the year of production of the Commando you're working on?
KATO 115 #4 Posted June 19, 2014 If your tractor is a COMMANDO 8 and not a COMMANDO V8 then the shaft is common to other short frame models. The lower support is still available new... part number 6396 ,and there is a bushing you can replace in the bottom hole for the lower steering shaft that is availabe new...part num 6397. there may also be a bushingbearing on the front end of the lower shaft you should probably replace part num 6472 that is also available new. Neither of the steering shafts themselves are available new ...but if you check with one of our Vendors im sure one of them can help you http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/92-vendors/ And to
Kesboy 0 #5 Posted June 20, 2014 Hi, many thanks for your very helpful reply. I'm at my holiday home by the sea until Sunday but when I get home, I'll order the available parts and have already contacted a vendor regarding the two shafts. I'm very grateful for your help. sorekiwi 761 #6 Posted June 20, 2014 Welcome to Red Square Phil. The only addition I have is that you can adjust the shim washers on the lower steering shaft to pull that shaft backwards and further into mesh with the gear on the steering column. Take a good look at the steering support bracket at the bottom of the column, it is not unusual to find it broken.

meadowfield 2,651 #11 Posted July 1, 2014 as they point out, the steering can be shimmed up or a small amount skimmed from the bottom of the steering shaft if you are struggling.
