Toro XL420 free wheels & jerks going down hill

Recommended Posts

david4speed

I have a Toro XL420 (about 2005) I cut my lawn with regularly. I has about 100 hours on it. When I go down a small incline it skips and jerks, also goes very fast, almost out of control. In reverse it works great. I'm not ready to buy a new lawn tractor yet. Does anyone know if this is an adjustment or a major repair?

Do you have the service manual? Found one that is over 11MB. If I add it to our files can you download it from there? Have no idea how I found it so no sense trying to explain it to you.

Thanks Garry,

I don't have any manuals on that XL420. I got it for a song @ Home Depot for it was the last one they had and they needed to get rid of it fast. If you could email me the manual @ davidschroyer46@aol.com I would really appreaciate it. Hopefully I will know what to look for.

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

I got this file over 4 years ago and can only guess it came from Toro. It is too large for email and I can't upload it to the manuals here at RS for some reason. Tried to split the file into 4 parts and the first 1/4 ended up at over 17MB. Went back to Toro to try and locate it again so I could send you a link to it but no luck there either. Will keep trying.

Hey Garry,

I don't gess you can send just the section about the transmission & differential? Have you tried to ZIP file it?

Thanks,

That is the problem - I can't split the file up. I'm not the sharpest tack in the box when it comes to computers. Every so often a Toro file goes huge as soon as you alter it for some reason. The good news is I found the file at Toro again and Karl is trying to add it to the library.

The model number and serial number usually required at Toro would not work for this one.

Had to use the model name LX420 with no spaces or dash and the no dash is not normal either.

Will post again when it is available for download.

I should have posted this here so you can get the file yourself and save some time.

Finally found it at Toro. Go to

http://www.toro.com/...es/default.aspx

Type in LX420 - no spaces or dashes

4 results come up and 2 are for the LX420. Click on one of those and the service manual is 492-9184.

We will eventually get it posted in the Manuals library here.

Thanks Garry,

I was incorrect on the model, sorry. Its a Toro LX420 (not XL420) 2006. Not my favorate kind of horse. Anyway, I found the parts manual. Very helpfull. I am pretty positive its the tansmission after looking at the parts manual. The parts are available through Partstree. You can buy individial transmission parts. A little pricey. Not sure if I want to tackle a differential repair or not. I really appreaceate your help.

Thanks alot,

Dave

You did get the service manual did you?  They usually help big time in diagnosing problems.
