W/H JUNKY 43 #1 Posted June 14, 2014 (edited) When i refill the trans do I fill it up until the oil comes out the hole on the side. Or should I add more? There is no dip stick on this trans. It just seems like the oil level should be in the center of the axle bearings. Edited June 14, 2014 by W/H JUNKY
rmaynard 15,626 #2 Posted June 14, 2014 I never add gear lube. It's always a complete drain and refill situation. For a transmission that has no dipstick, remove the shifter and pour in the recommended amount there. Sent from my Moto G using Tapatalk
oldredrider 2,549 #3 Posted June 14, 2014 To answer your question, yes, add gear oil until is just comes out the side plug hole.
rmaynard 15,626 #4 Posted June 14, 2014 I respectfully disagree with the above. I just filled my 857 transmission (5053) with the prescribed 1-1/2 quarts. I made sure that the transmission was level by placing a level on the frame. I removed the plug from the side of the transmission and 10 ounces of oil ran out. On a B-80 (5084) which holds 2 quarts, more fluid would be lost. The plug is in the same place since the left side cases are identical (3901). If I am wrong, please enlighten me. Racinbob 11,238 #5 Posted June 20, 2014 I kinda think it's both Bob. If I'm remembering correctly some manuals state until it comes out the fill hole which wouldn't be much oil. Mine calls for 2 quarts and that's what I put in it. I did as you do and filled through the shifter hole. Without tilting the tractor towards it's right I'd never get 2 quarts in through the fill hole.
kudzu3 323 #6 Posted June 21, 2014 Which brings up another question (not intending to hi jac, sorry), How do you get that thick stuff into the fill hole, I had to fill my B 80 through the shifter port because of the viscocity, it wouldn't go into that little bitty hole. Racinbob 11,238 #7 Posted June 21, 2014 The easiest way is to simply remove the shifter and fill through that.
