48" Mower Deck

Recommended Posts

I saw a picture of a 48" mower deck for a Wheel Horse where they doubles up the blades. They where positioned them like an X. Is this a bad idea or will this work?

My 48" came from the PO with edger blades in addition to the normal blades.  both were so worn out that I just removed them and put regular set up.  others who have used this set up will chime in.

If it doesn't seem to improve the mowing...you have a spare set blades! :D

I'm  curious to know whether there is an advantage to putting two standard blades

on each spindle.  Has anyone tried this--with what result in comparison with the

regular setup?

I believe those "upper" blades are Gator blades, I've seen that setup here on RedSquare, never tried it myself.

GlenPettit is one of the guys who sets his blades up that way, although I believe he sets the Gator and regular blades at a 45 degree angle, not 90 like your photo shows.  You might try a search here to find some other threads that discuss this method.

Been using 6 blades on a 42 and 48 deck works grt cuts the grass finer also the extra blades gives it a higher lift.

I also have a zero turn Kabota with a 60 in deck by taking out the fat washer I was able to put 6 blades on it.

It made a great difference in cutting and lift. I've had this setup for 2 1/2 years now no problem.

I had a Honda Recyler push mower that had this design as standard equipment. The only difference was that they wer sandwiched on top of each other, (not as an "X") and locked into position with a fabricated piece of metal to keep them from shifting. The cutting edges were separated by about a half inch for the purpose of a finer mulching cut.

My double pulley deck drive spindle seized up and shredded the shaft.

      Looking for a replacement assembly.
      My rig is 310-8, 1986ish.

The deck is 36" rear discharge. Similar vintage but has no identifying tags.

The drive spindle on this one is front and center, not the older version with the tall spindle near the back.

Well it looks like I'm out of luck. I have been looking for blades for my Lawn Ranger and having zero luck. I have tried Wheel Horse part numbers 7908, 7909. Toro part numbers 8777, and 53322 and no one has anything like this. I was thinking about doing a cut down, but finding right hand and left hand blades seems to be the problem.
Anyone making blades, constructing blades, got a work around, etc? My blades are usable, but that is about it.

I have a 1996 520H Wheel Horse for sale.  The tractor has just over 800 hours on it.  It comes with a 48 inch deck.  The deck is a 1995 and has over 1,500 hours on it, as it came brand new with my 312-8 that I sold several years ago.  This 520-H has the swept front axle so it can handle a 60 inch deck.  I just replaced the battery and the deck belt this summer.  The engine is a 20HP Onan and it starts right up but requires the full choke.  The transmission is an Eaton 1100-062, hydrostatic.  The deck is in rough shape but the spindles appear to be in good working order.  The right rear tire has some cracking.  The original operator's manual for the 520H is included, as is the original operating and maintenance instructions for the deck, plus the installation instructions for the deck.  Also included is a new PTO belt and several miscellaneous deck wheels and rollers.  Additional pictures available upon request.  Asking $500.
