Scotsman 46 #1 Posted June 5, 2014 I was thinking of picking up a 516 H But a knowledgable friend warned me of a overheating issue with the hydro. He said ones with bad trannies overheat,and it is a big problem. So does anyone know of any issuies? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Kelly 1,029 #2 Posted June 5, 2014 Not sure about the over heating, but the eaton 700 had a bad rep for being a weak trans, not built to use ground engaging attachments, like a bottom plow, tiller, and really as old as they are getting snow plows and rollers. buy with caution. boovuc 1,090 #3 Posted June 5, 2014 As Kelly stated! The Eaton 700 is a big weak link. The 520-H uses the Eaton 1100 rear and it is many many times better than the 700 Eaton. The Eaton 700 didn't overheat that I knew of. It just wasn't designed to be used on a heavy duty garden tractor like the 500 series. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It's too bad because it came with a 2 stage aftermarket snowblower, Wheel weights, Chains, And 5 tombstone weights. All for 600$ It seemed to good to be true, and I guess it was. Forest Road 594 #10 Posted June 5, 2014 $600 sounds good! I have a completely rebuilt factory WH 2 stage. In my opinion they're very poorly constructed. That was my thinking. If all else is good (the cosmetic and rust issues are pretty easily rectified), scrag the tranny, and pop in an 1100, or 8-speed with the 1 1/8" axles. If you are remotely mechanically declined (you have to be declined in some manner if you like working on greasy stuff ), the swap out is pretty straightforward. I want to move out that way. Around my area (upstate ny) I can't touch that machine for less than a grand. And even then it's not in as good of shape. From the looks of that tractor a guy would just be asking for trouble from a 700 tranny. I do have a 700 pump for sale. I got into 520's while I had the 516 and just couldn't go back to the 516. PaulC 341 #20 Posted June 6, 2014 I have a 1987 312-A with the eaton 700. Tractor has 1172 hrs on it and the trans still works great. I was told it was used to mow 3-4 acre lot for most of its life. All I use it for was mowing and blowing snow and its really smooth and works great. As long as you are pretty confident it wasn't used improperly for rototilling etc and it seems to work properly I wouldn't be scared of it. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Scotsman 46 #22 Posted June 8, 2014 I didn't buy it. I heard alot of conflicting opinions, but most seemed to generaly be saying buy it and swap the tranny. If someone want to know where it is, i will let them know. The guy wanted 900$ with a mowing deck included, but the 600$ he ageed to sell it to me for was without the deck. Scotsman 46 #25 Posted June 14, 2014 (edited) Well I couldn't wait for the sun to come up to take a decent picture, I was so excited! But I bought a 418-A My first venture into the world of hydro. Not the one in the picture from the previous post,that one was gone. But this is a 418-A with a 48 inch mowing deck. Has a nice hydraulic lift. I am pleased. What do you guys think? I am putting the deck up for sale. The guy said it was a 48" but I didn't measure it yet. Anybody want to trade me a snowblower attachment? and some weights for the deck?
